Flowers in Phuket: how this catalogue is laid out

Thai dendrobium and mokara orchids on the bench

This section splits two ways. Go by flower and you land in roses, peonies, tulips, hydrangea, lisianthus or orchids. Go by form and you get single-variety bouquets, designed arrangements, baskets and boxes, the door to use once the address is settled.

Most people arrive knowing the recipient and the room, not the variety. Start with form, narrow to flower, then let price do the rest.

What grows here, what lands by plane

Most flowers in Phuket have a flight behind them. The island gives palms, heliconia and ginger, nothing temperate. Roses, tulips, hydrangea, lisianthus and peonies arrive by air through Bangkok. That leg is why the peony section opens for a few weeks and shuts again, and why a rose colour that filled the shelf in January can be gone by July.

Orchids are the exception. Dendrobium, mokara and vanda are the names you meet most here. Thailand grows them on the mainland at scale and exports them worldwide, so what reaches the island is fresh, unfussy and priced like a local crop.

They also outlast everything else here.

A dendrobium spray holds two weeks in a hotel room; imported roses give four or five days. Waxy petals are the armour for heat and salt air. They travel upright in a suitcase, which suits a recipient flying home on Sunday.

What the rainy season does

Phuket runs a humid tropical climate all year, usually 25 to 33 °C, with the rainy season from May to October. Rain arrives in heavy hours with sun between, and the hill roads linking the west coast beaches take the worst of every one.

Two things follow. We quote a wider window in those months: a Patong–Kamala run of thirty minutes in February can take an hour in September. Vase life shortens at the other end. Warm wet air suits grey mould, and a vase on an open terrace is a slow oven. So stems travel wet-wrapped, the long legs go in a cool box, and the care note we send is worth its thirty seconds.

"About a resort delivery I ask one thing: does the air conditioning run all day, or only at night. That decides the bouquet."

One flower or many

A single-variety bouquet is a stack of one thing: twenty-five roses, a bundle of tulips, nine hydrangea heads. A designed arrangement mixes flower, foliage and shape, with somebody on our bench settling the proportions.

For a resort recipient, single-variety usually wins. It photographs cleanly in poor hotel lighting and splits between two glasses when the villa has no vase. Designed arrangements earn their keep when a table is involved. If the flowers have to hold an anniversary dinner, a small wedding or a birthday laid out by the pool at eight, the design is what you are paying for.

Baskets and boxes remove the vase question. Both sit on soaked foam, so nothing needs cutting or topping up by a guest. A box also survives a motorbike leg better than an armful of wrapped stems.

Basket arrangement leaving for a Bang Tao villa
  • Roses — imported, 50 to 80 cm, the default romantic choice.
  • Orchids — Thai-grown, and they hold longer here than anything imported.
  • Peonies and tulips — seasonal blocks; check before you plan a date around them.
  • Hydrangea and lisianthus — soft palettes, thirsty stems, happiest in cooled air.

Areas, timing and paying

Delivery runs from 9 AM to 10 PM. The map covers Phuket Town, Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Surin, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao. Along the west coast we normally land inside 90 to 180 minutes; villas, marinas and airport meets are quoted on their own. The catalogue starts at 2200 THB, paid by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay or bank transfer, with cash in baht taken at the door.

Hotel handovers are routine. Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket, Trisara, Banyan Tree Phuket and Veranda Resort Phuket take flowers at the desk, which wants the guest name in Latin letters, the check-in date and room number.

Villas are where deliveries go wrong, nearly always the same way. Nobody answers at the gate and the guard has no name to match. Send a number that will be picked up, a pin on the map, and a line on whether to hand over at the door or leave it with the villa host.

"A pin beats a written address here. I have sent a courier up the wrong hill on a perfectly correct street name."
