What actually ends the arrangement
Rarely the flowers. Lisianthus stands a long time in soaked foam, longer than most of what sits beside it, and the two things that finish a basket early are both avoidable.
The first is a leaf buried in the wet block. It sours before any flower fades, and the smell arrives before the sight of it does, which is why a careful build strips the lower part of every stem before seating it. In this humidity that goes faster than it would in a dry climate, so it is worth checking the base if a basket starts to smell sweetish by the fourth or fifth day.
The second is a block allowed to dry out. Water goes in at the rim, slowly, and never over the heads.
Spent flowers come off the branch one at a time, taken close to the joint so the unopened buds beside them are left alone. The stem carries on and opens the next one. A whole stem is pulled only when nothing living is left on it, and the empty hole in the foam gets covered with a leaf rather than refilled, because a used channel will not hold a fresh stem against water.
