Flower baskets by contents in Phuket: built for the distance it will be seen from

Mixed flower basket with pale heads against dark tropical foliage in Phuket

Nobody holds a basket up to their face. It goes on a side table in a villa, on a counter in a lobby, or on the floor beside a doorway, and from then on it is looked at from three or four metres away. That single fact decides the contents, and it explains why an arrangement that photographs beautifully in the hand can look muddled once it is standing in a room.

Colour is the first thing to go wrong at that distance. The eye stops picking out individual flowers and starts reading masses, so shades that sit close together in tone merge into one block. A mix of pink, coral and soft red becomes a single pink shape from the doorway however varied it looked on the workbench.

Contrast is what carries. Pale heads against the dark tropical foliage we work with here hold their shape from across a room, and so does one strong colour with everything else kept subordinate to it.

Deep shades behave badly in a deep basket. Burgundy and dark purple drop into the shadow between the stems and read as gaps rather than as flowers, which is why they belong at the outer edge where light still reaches them.

White carries further than anything else.

The address changes the build

Where the basket is going tells us how far away it will be seen from, and that is more useful to a florist than the name of the occasion. Four kinds of address cover most of what leaves the workshop:

  • A villa in Bang Tao, Surin or Rawai, where the arrangement stands in a large open room and needs contrast to survive the space.
  • A hotel room in Patong, Kata, Karon or Kamala, where it sits close to the guest and can afford finer detail.
  • A restaurant table by the sea, where the basket has to stay low enough for people to see each other over it.
  • An office or a shop in Phuket Town, looked at from the door by everyone who walks in, and looked at again at close range by whoever works there all day.

Thai orchids do the heavy lifting in the first two cases. They hold their form in local humidity, they read clearly at a distance, and they are still standing when the softer imported material has finished. Imported roses give the solid block of colour, hydrangeas fill a wide basket quickly, and seasonal peonies go in as an accent rather than as the body of the work.

Chrysanthemums are the quiet workhorse. They take the foam well, they last, and in a pale scheme they hold the outline while everything around them opens and fades.

Getting it there

Low flower basket on a dinner table by the sea in Phuket

Along the west coast a basket takes 90 to 180 minutes. Villas, marinas and the airport run on separate windows, since the last stretch of those routes is often longer than the drive itself. From May to October the rain and the evening traffic on the hill roads add time, and we build that into the slot rather than promising the same window in every season.

Deliveries run 9 AM to 10 PM. Orders start at 2200 THB, and payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht.

Temperatures of 25 to 33 °C and humid air are easier on a basket than on a hand tied bouquet, because the foam keeps working while the arrangement travels. What the humidity does do is speed up opening, so a basket ordered for an anniversary dinner three days ahead should be built a little tighter than one needed tonight.

"Guests choose from a photograph taken half a metre away. We build for the metres they will actually be standing at."

Send the room or the venue with the order and the contents follow from it. Flower baskets by contents in Phuket are worth deciding that way round, because the same money buys a very different arrangement depending on whether it will be read from a metre or from five.
