Baskets with orchids in Phuket: the branch, the angle and the vial

Orchid branch set in an arc over the rim of a basket in a Phuket workshop

The branch is usually set at an angle instead of straight up, with the tip carried out past the rim of the basket. Held upright, a heavy branch pulls the whole arrangement off balance. Orchid flowers face forwards, so a view from above loses most of what makes them worth the money.

Side on is how they are read.

Buds sit at the end of every branch, getting smaller towards the tip. Most of those will not open on cut material, which is normal rather than a fault in the batch. Count the open flowers when you order and treat the rest as shape. A basket described by its bud count is really being sold on its open flowers, and that difference is worth asking about before anyone quotes a price.

"Customers count buds and I count open flowers. On the phone that is the whole conversation about price."

Vials inside the arrangement

A cut orchid feeds poorly from dense foam, because the stem is thin and its channels are narrow. Each branch is therefore planted in its own small vial of solution, and the vial goes into the foam the way a stem would. Moss, sisal or a folded leaf hides it. A good build hides it completely, with only greenery visible from above and no plastic catching the light between the flowers. A vial seated crooked loses solution on the way and empties into the bottom of the basket.

Two water sources, then, topped up separately. The foam takes a thin stream at the rim, which keeps the greenery and everything else going, while the vial is checked on its own every few days with the moss lifted aside.

Water for the vial should be at room temperature. Cold from the tap does a tropical flower no favours. Nobody cuts the stem when refilling it either, since an orchid has no spare length and every centimetre comes off the height of the arrangement.

People throw these vials away as packaging on the first evening. That is the single most common way an orchid basket ends early, which is why the courier says something about the moss before leaving.

How the island builds it

Thai orchids make this an easy format to put together here, and one or two branches go into a bowl with imported roses, hydrangea and tropical foliage underneath. Nobody packs a basket solid with orchids. The rest of the bowl is there to carry the branch and cover the foam along the rim.

Deliveries along the west coast sit in a 90 to 180 minute window, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao are in the first band, and Rawai, Chalong, Mai Khao and Phuket Town sit on the same board. We work 9 AM to 10 PM.

The rainy season runs May to October and we add route time for it, as we do for evening traffic on the hill roads. None of that troubles a basket with sealed vials in it, provided the piece travels upright. A tilt costs solution, and the loss stays invisible until somebody lifts the moss.

At 25 to 33 °C with humidity on top, foam gives up water faster than it would in a cooler room. Orders start at 2200 THB, and payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht.

A week in, the picture is usually the same: the roses have gone and the orchid is still standing. Pull the spent material out, press the arrangement in towards the centre, and baskets with orchids in Phuket carry on until the foam itself starts to dry. Tell us the district and the hour of the handover, and we will decide how many branches the bowl can carry.
