Baskets with gerberas in Phuket: why this format stays low, and what to do if you want height
A gerbera basket is built wide rather than tall, and the reason is in the stem. It gets cut short before it goes into the soaked block, so the whole arrangement ends up somewhere between a hand's width and a forearm in height, and it keeps a clear line of sight across whatever surface it stands on.
That suits more addresses here than it sounds like it would. A dinner table by the sea is the obvious one: the basket sits between the plates and people talk over the top of it all evening. A hotel room in Patong, Kata, Karon or Kamala is the second, since the free surfaces in a room are a desk and a bedside table, and neither of them wants anything tall.

Going bigger means going wider, and it is worth picturing that before choosing a size. A large gerbera basket covers a good part of a dining table and needs a room where that is welcome, which a villa in Bang Tao, Surin or Rawai usually is and a hotel room usually is not.
If you do want height, more gerberas is not the answer. The flower has no more to give upwards, so tall material gets added around the discs instead, and the discs themselves stay in the lower two thirds of the arrangement where they can be read properly. Thai orchids do that job here better than anything else we work with, giving a line above the dome without adding weight to it. Imported roses sit underneath as solid colour, hydrangeas fill width quickly, and chrysanthemums hold the outline around the rim while everything else opens.
Seasonal peonies go in near the edge when they are available, positioned so they can be lifted out later without leaving a hole in the silhouette.
Height comes with a second cost that is easy to miss. Anything standing above the discs has to be steady enough to survive the trip, and a tall element in a wide basket behaves like a sail when the arrangement is carried from a vehicle to a villa door in wind or rain. Restaurant orders have their own rule. A basket for a table by the sea gets measured against the table rather than against the occasion, and the honest answer is often a smaller size than the sender had in mind, with the money going into the quality of the discs instead of the width of the arrangement.
The island climate has one effect on the format and it is a helpful one. Humid air at 25 to 33 °C means the block loses water slowly, so a wide low basket, which has a large block underneath it, runs for longer here than the same arrangement would in a dry room. Air conditioning is the exception, and a basket set directly under a vent needs a pour every day.

Villas, marinas and the airport run on separate windows, since the approach at the end of those routes is often longer than the drive itself.
