Flowers in a hat box in Phuket: the height that works on a table

The height is what makes this shape usable at dinner. Guests look across the flowers rather than around them, which is why the low round box turns up on restaurant tables and in meeting rooms far more often than a tall arrangement does.

Put something under it. The base holds wet foam behind a liner, and although a good box keeps that in, a card wall standing on polished wood for a week can leave a ring anyway.

Turn it once every day or two if it stands against a wall, because flowers lean towards the light and a box left in one position gradually goes lopsided.

Water and warmth

Pour a thin stream at the rim until the top of the foam stops taking it, then leave it alone until the next morning. Water poured over the heads themselves sits between petals and browns their edges within a day.

The rest of the lifespan is decided by temperature. A warm shelf, a draught from a cooling unit and a patch of afternoon sun each shorten it, and moving the box to a cooler corner does more for it than anything you can add to the water.

Air here runs at 25 to 33 °C with tropical humidity, which cuts both ways. The top of the foam dries more slowly than it would in dry air, while a room with the air conditioning running reverses that completely, so the gap between a terrace and a cooled bedroom matters more than the gap between seasons.

Where they go on the island

West coast addresses sit in a 90 to 180 minute window, with separate windows for villas, marinas and the airport. A box travels better than a wrapped bouquet on a hill road, since the water is inside the foam and every stem is fixed where it was planted, so nothing needs rebuilding at the door. During the rainy season from May to October, and on evening runs, we add route time.

A dinner by the sea and an anniversary in a restaurant are the two regulars, both of them for the height. Resort birthdays are the third: Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket, Trisara, Banyan Tree Phuket and Veranda Resort Phuket all set a box straight onto a table in the room, and nothing further is asked of the guest.

Villas take longer to reach and are the one address where we ask who will be in the house, since a box left on a covered terrace all afternoon is a different job from one carried straight into a cooled room.

Hours run 9 AM to 10 PM, and for a table booked in the evening we would rather deliver in the morning, so the box has a few hours out of its packing before anyone sits down.

Thai orchids last longest of what we plant in a round box, chrysanthemums follow them, and hydrangeas drink hardest and answer first to a missed top-up, which is why they go near the rim where the water is poured. Imported roses sit in the middle of that range, and seasonal peonies make a single large centre.
