The route decides more of this than the catalogue does. Along the west coast a delivery takes 90 to 180 minutes, covering Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and the species that handles the longer run is not always the one somebody had in mind.

Before you order

Ask what arrived recently rather than what is listed. A catalogue is a list of names and a workbench is a list of stems, and only one of those can leave the building this afternoon.

Ask how many days it stands. If the answer is a number rather than a shrug, the shop is paying attention to its own stock, and a shop that will not give a number is usually guessing about the rest of the order too.

Ask about scent if the flowers are going into a hotel bedroom, because a closed air conditioned room concentrates it in a way an open terrace never does.

Then there is the question that gets left out most often. Whether anybody will actually be at the address.

Three things that change what we recommend:

• The district, since the far windows rule out the most delicate builds.
• The hour, because an evening run over the hills is the slowest of the day.
• Whether somebody is there to put the flowers into water, or the delivery waits at a desk.

What we say when the answer changes the order

Thai orchids are what we suggest for a room somebody is returning to later. They hold for a long time in this air, they carry almost no scent, and nothing bad happens while they wait.

Chrysanthemum is the answer for a counter or a reception desk. Hydrangea is the one we push back on for the far windows, since the head is heavy on a short stem and the build wants a short route and internal support.

Imported roses go anywhere and are the safest choice when the recipient is somebody you do not know well. Seasonal peonies are worth having only when the run is short and the date is flexible.

We work 9 AM to 10 PM, and the island is on UTC+7 with no daylight saving.

At Rosewood Phuket or Banyan Tree Phuket the delivery usually reaches the building before it reaches the guest, so the species matters more there than the wrapping does.

Phuket Town, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao are sorted by the actual street rather than by area, which occasionally moves an order from the coastal window into the longer one. When that happens we say so before we build, because the species we would recommend changes with it.

A villa is the easiest address of all for this section. Somebody is usually there, a container usually exists, and the whole question of how a flower behaves while it waits stops applying.
