### Lily bouquets in Phuket: pollen, scent and the size of the room Open lilies carry heavy anthers on long filaments above the petals. The pollen on them is orange, greasy and behaves like a dye, and on a tablecloth or a dress it does not come out in a normal wash. Florists snip the anthers off with small scissors as soon as a flower opens. Lift the powder with sticky tape, or shake the fabric out while it hangs free, since damp turns loose pollen into a stain that stays. Timing helps as well. An anther taken off the moment the flower opens has not shed anything yet, while one left for a day has already dusted whatever sits under it, and the powder travels further than people expect from a sleeve brushing past. That advice carries more weight where the linen is not yours. Villa and hotel textiles are pale by default, and a bouquet on a rattan side table sits within reach of a cushion cover somebody else will have to replace. #### Scent, and the rooms that take it Most scented varieties are strong. The smell fills a flat within half an hour and stays for as long as the flowers are open, which is welcome in a hall or a large sitting room and oppressive in a small bedroom. Keep the vase off the dining table too. Sweet floral scent argues with food, and a side console solves it without moving the flowers out of sight. Room volume decides this more than the stem count does. An open plan villa or a terrace with sliding doors handles a full bunch comfortably, because the air has somewhere to go. A closed hotel room with the air conditioning running all night does the opposite, and the same bouquet that was pleasant at check in is heavy by morning.
