Get well flowers in Phuket: ask the ward before you order

Falling ill on holiday is its own kind of miserable. Most orders here come from people who cannot get to the island themselves. You are in a room you did not choose, the labels are in a script you cannot read, and whoever would normally turn up with soup is a long flight away.

There is usually a second person in that room. A partner translating symptoms through a phone app, a parent who has not properly sat down since Tuesday. They are the one who meets the courier. A bouquet treats nothing; it gives that person something to do with their hands and something to look at that is not a monitor.

So the first question is never about colour. It is where the flowers actually go: a hospital ward, a hotel room, or a villa where somebody is lying low with a bandaged foot.

Where the box is actually going

Hospitals set their own rules on cut flowers. Plenty of wards restrict them, and intensive care does not allow them at all. Five minutes on the phone, or a message to whoever is sitting beside the bed, tells you more than any guesswork from abroad.

That answer changes the whole order.

If flowers are out, the order changes shape rather than getting cancelled. A plant in a pot is sometimes allowed where stems in water are not. And there is a second address worth keeping in mind: the hotel room the patient goes back to, so something is waiting when they are let out.

What goes in the box

The build is narrow, and each rule comes from something that went wrong once. Scent is the first cut, because a smell that is pleasant in a living room is inescapable in a room nobody can leave, and the rest follows from a bedside table already holding a jug, a charger and a plate.

• No heavy scent — chrysanthemum, small-headed roses, dendrobium orchid.

• Its own container — a lined box or basket, arriving with the water in it.

Bikes, reef and sun

Not everyone here is ill. Plenty of these orders go to someone who spent day one of a two-week holiday in the sun. A scooter goes down on wet tarmac on the Patong hill, or a foot opens up on coral off Kata or Rawai, and a cut that would heal quietly at home takes its time in warm salt water.

A hotel room is the easier delivery, and it still has rules. Reception holds flowers against the guest name, so send it as it appears on the booking. Say so if the guest should not be woken, because a knock at nine in the morning is no gift to someone who was awake all night.

Ordering from four time zones away

Most of these orders come from family who are not on the island. They know somebody has been admitted and little beyond that. What makes it work is one local number: whoever is at the hospital, awake, and able to pick up when the courier is downstairs.

Visiting hours vary between hospitals and wards. Ask the person on the ground for the window and give us an hour rather than a day, because a courier arriving twenty minutes after visiting ends has nowhere to leave a box.
