A flower subscription in Phuket, built from what came in that morning

Florist building a weekly subscription bouquet from orchids and roses in Phuket

A one off order runs backwards. Somebody picks a photograph, and a florist then has to reproduce it out of whatever arrived that day.

A standing order runs the other way round. The arrangement is agreed as a rhythm, so the florist walks into the cold room and works from the best thing on the shelf. Nothing has to be forced into the shape of an image taken last spring, which is the single difference that explains most of what follows.

What the island supplies

Thai orchids come in steadily, imported roses hold the middle of most arrangements, and chrysanthemum, hydrangea and seasonal peony move in and out depending on the week. Tropical foliage does the structural work almost every time. Between May and October the rains change what arrives in good condition rather than what arrives at all, so a subscription in those months looks different from one running in February. A florist choosing on someone's behalf will also put stems in a vase that the same person would never have clicked on, because choosing from photographs pulls almost everyone towards the same two or three shapes.

That unfamiliar stem is usually the one mentioned afterwards.

The brief matters more than any flower list

Boundaries stop a repeating order becoming a lottery for both sides. Colour, size and scent are worth settling before the first delivery, along with anything a recipient should never receive.

Scent is not a small point. Some varieties fill a small room completely, and a person working from home notices that long before they notice a colour scheme.

Say something about the vases in the house as well. Tall stems arriving at a household that owns one short jug get cut down every week, and half of what was paid for goes into the bin along with the trimmings.

Four things settle before the first box leaves:

  • The day of the week, chosen once. Delivery along the west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes, and villas, marinas and airport runs have their own windows.
  • Who receives it. A villa gate, a restaurant and a private house in Rawai behave nothing alike.
  • The scent limit, in one sentence.
  • A permanent stop list, which is usually shorter than people expect.

Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start from 2200 THB, and payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht.

Heat is the other constant

Air here sits between 25 and 33 °C most of the year, and a subscription quietly solves what heat does to cut flowers. A stem past its best gets pulled without ceremony, because another delivery is already booked. Nobody nurses a tired arrangement for an extra four days out of thriftiness.

The reverse is true of the address. An hour at a locked gate in the middle of the day costs more than any packing can give back, and on a subscription that hour repeats on schedule.

Nothing on the payment side changes once the first order is set, which is one fewer thing to think about every week.

"The first month is about the day, not the flowers. Once the day is right, everything else is a conversation about colour."

— JFLOO florist

Start with a month. Give the district, the weekday, the hour and the name of whoever takes the box at the address, and the first two deliveries will show what needs adjusting in the brief.
