Most of the price of a set is in the flowers and in the sorting. Preserved blooms cost more than fresh ones because they have been through a process, last a year or more and need no replacing. Large single-headed roses cost more than spray varieties.

A set of heads matched for size costs more again than the same number of mixed ones, since the matching is done by rejecting most of a box. That is the least visible line on any invoice and the most honest one, because what is being paid for is the material that did not go in. The rest is packaging and hand assembly. Neither of those scales down cleanly, which is why a smaller set is rarely cheaper in proportion to its size.

A cheap candle beside carefully matched roses does not read as thrift, it reads as a mistake, and it pulls the rest of the box down with it. Shredded paper used to fill a gap does the same thing, since it announces the space it was meant to hide. Removing an item is nearly always better than including one that cannot hold its place. The working test is whether anything in the box could be taken out without being missed, and if something could, it should not have been packed in the first place.

Hand assembly is the line people underestimate. The tray is cut, every item is seated and the fit is checked before the lid closes for the first time, and that work does not shrink with the contents: a box of three objects takes nearly as long as a box of five. Timing costs something too, since a set built on fresh stems has to be made up on the morning it leaves rather than the week before.
