New Year arrangements in Phuket: what the air does to a foam base
Two things decide how a festive pot behaves on this island, and both of them are in the air. Phuket sits in a humid tropical climate, usually between 25 and 33 °C, and damp warm air is generous to a soaked block of florist foam. It is slower to forgive anything dried standing in the same pot, which softens over weeks rather than days.

Top it up through the rim every day or two anyway, slowly, until it stops taking any. The interval is wider than most people are used to, and the pot will not tell you when it has been missed, because the fresh stems fail before the surface looks different.

Rain is the other half of it. The rainy season runs from May to October, and evening traffic on the hill roads adds time on top of that, so we build route time into the schedule instead of promising the same window in every kind of weather. A pot travels upright, in a box with the base fixed, and it is the one format that cannot be laid on its side for a single turn. The courier carries it in two hands from the car to the door, which on a wet driveway is the slowest stretch of the whole run.
Three lines in the order settle most of what happens at the address:
- A map pin with the gate or the villa entrance marked.
- A phone number for whoever is there in the afternoon.
- A flat indoor surface, since wet foam and an outdoor table in a downpour make a poor pair.

When a bouquet does the job better
Someone who enjoys arranging flowers will be mildly disappointed by a finished object, because there is nothing left to do with it. A guest who checks out in two days will not carry a pot onto a plane either, and wrapped stems travel better in that case.
There is also the handover itself. A pot is set down rather than held up, so anything that happens in front of a room of people is a bouquet.
The opposite case is where this format earns its keep: a hotel room booked for someone arriving, a villa taken for a week, an office where nobody is going to hunt for a vase. New Year arrangements in Phuket mostly go to addresses of that kind, in Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, and the occasions behind them are resort ones, an anniversary, a family date, a dinner by the sea.
The fresh layer comes from what the island actually receives. Thai orchids hold in foam longer than anything else cut, imported roses give the large heads, chrysanthemums keep their shape to the end, hydrangeas fill volume with a single stem, and tropical foliage does the structural work at the rim. Seasonal peonies go in when they are running, always inside the mass where the rest of the build shields them on the drive.
Candles are the last thing worth agreeing on before the order goes in. Fresh material barely catches, but a dried element that has spent a week in a warm room will take a flame in seconds, so either leave a clear hand's width around the wick or ask us to fit a battery light instead.
