150 cm roses in Phuket: when a shorter grade is the better order

Long roses being trimmed to fit a hotel room vase in Phuket

There are addresses where this height works against the flowers from the moment the car stops. A small hotel room. A restaurant table. An office desk in Phuket Town. A villa bedroom where the only clear surface is beside the bed.

In all of them the first thing that happens is a pair of scissors.

There is nowhere to stand a metre and a half, the recipient has to get it through a doorway without catching the outer heads, and two people are needed to do that properly. None of it is a fault of the flowers. It is a mismatch between the format and the room it was sent to, and it is the easiest mistake to avoid because it costs nothing to ask first.

"Nobody has ever complained that a bouquet was too easy to carry. The complaints all go the other way."

Orders start at 2200 THB and close by card, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht, so the shorter grade is not the cheap answer here. It is usually the one that arrives in better condition.

The option customers rarely ask about

A shorter stem in a tall narrow vessel gives much of the same vertical line without any of the handling problem. The arrangement holds that shape for its whole life instead of losing it on the first evening, and it can be set down where it is meant to stay rather than carried through a resort.

We suggest it more often than we are taken up on it.

For a dinner by the sea or an anniversary in a room it is usually the better order outright. The height still reads across a table, nobody has to hold anything, and the piece survives the evening without being moved twice.

What the climate adds to the argument

Air on the island sits at 25 to 33 °C and stays humid, which a cut rose tolerates well as long as it is standing in water. A metre and a half of stem is rarely standing in water. It waits in a car, it waits in a corridor, it waits while somebody finds the guest, and every one of those waits costs a tall grade more than it costs a short one.

Between May and October there is rain to add to that. Showers on the west coast and hill traffic in the evening both add route time, and the delivery board runs 90 to 180 minutes with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes.

Three cases where the full height still earns its place:

  • a wedding by the sea, where the flowers are photographed against an open horizon
  • a resort lobby or a window, where the bouquet has to hold a vertical line for a day
  • a presentation in front of an audience, where the size of the object is part of the gesture.

Getting it into the room

Where the full height is the right call, the last twenty metres still need planning. A metre and a half goes into an ordinary lift standing up, though sharing that lift with a person is already tight, and a villa with an outside staircase and a narrow gate needs two people rather than one. Ask about steps and gateways when the order is placed and the outer heads survive the journey.

Resorts make this easier than private addresses do. Trisara and Banyan Tree Phuket both take a tall bouquet downstairs and bring it up later, which removes the worst part of the problem at no cost to anyone.

One question settles most orders

Ask whether anyone will be there to receive the bouquet properly. A bunch of this length cannot be left with a neighbour, propped in a stairwell or laid on its side for an hour without damage, and on this island a recipient out at a beach all day is common rather than unlikely.

The workshop runs 9 AM to 10 PM. If the answer to that question is no, send a shorter grade to the same address and put the difference into the count, and if the answer is yes, tell us the hour of the handover and we will hold the tall bunch in water until it is needed.
