Jubilee flowers in Dubai: the week before and the hour after

A round number birthday is known about months in advance. Almost nobody uses that. The order lands on the morning of the party, in the same hour as the cake and the seating plan, and the choice narrows to whatever is already standing in a cooler somewhere in the city.

Ordering early buys real things. Specific varieties can be requested instead of accepted, oversized pieces get built without anyone rushing the binding point, and unusual colours stop being a gamble. Dutch peonies come in outside their own season, which is worth knowing if the date falls in a month when nobody expects them. Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm have to be reserved because a shop does not keep them standing in quantity. Greenhouse tulips and chrysanthemums from the UAE are the steady part of the list, and they are what a late order usually ends up being built around.

Timing on the day is the other half of it. Flowers that turn up while a table is being laid get put on the floor of a busy kitchen, and a host who is already counting chairs does not need a courier at the door. Earlier in the day is calmer for everyone, and delivery across the city takes 2 to 4 hours anyway.

Heat is the constraint nobody plans around.

Summer, and the walk to the door

The desert climate takes summer up to 40 °C, and near the coast humidity is stacked on top of that. Neither of those does much damage inside a cooled car. Damage happens in the gaps: the walk across an open car park, the wait at a barrier, the time a box spends on a sunlit step because the doorbell went unanswered. Through the summer months we add insulated packing and keep the bouquet out of direct sun at every one of those points.

Where the flowers land shapes the route as much as the distance does. Jubilee flowers in Dubai mostly go to hotels in Downtown, Marina and Palm Jumeirah, where deliveries pass through service entrances and pick up time that has nothing to do with traffic. Offices in DIFC and Business Bay work the opposite way, quick to reach but only useful inside working hours. A home address in JBR sits between the two, and the usual thing that holds it up is a gate code nobody sent us.

The night the guests leave

An evening indoors is harder on cut stems than the drive over. Three things do most of it:

• Candles and warm air sitting over a laid table.
• A fruit bowl in the same room, because ripening apples and bananas give off ethylene and ethylene ages flowers.
• Air conditioning blowing straight into open heads until the petal edges brown.

Half an hour of work that night pays for the following week. Stems get a fresh angled cut, every leaf below the waterline comes off, and the water goes in cold. Peonies opened by a warm room will not close again, so anything still in bud is better kept away from the lamps overnight. Vases go back on a shelf away from the window before morning, since a sunlit sill in this city undoes the whole exercise by noon.

Tell us the date as soon as you have it, even if the flower is undecided. A week of notice is the difference between building the arrangement you described and building the nearest thing available on the day.
