Flowers in a small bag in Dubai: fewer stems, all of them visible

Small floral bag with short cut roses on a desk in Dubai

Less fits than the outline suggests. The walls are rigid, a liner takes up part of the width, and the foam block lies shallow along the base, so the number of planting positions is small and everything else follows from that.

Short dense heads are what the shape wants. Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm are cut right down, UAE greenhouse chrysanthemums hold their form longest of anything we put in one, and greenhouse tulips give a compact head that sits below the rim without argument. Dutch peonies out of season go in when the bag has to carry weight rather than count.

Tall material is the mistake to avoid. Cut down to a low rim it looks amputated rather than arranged, and the Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm lose everything they are bought for when they are shortened that far.

Because there are few stems, each one is visible. A weak head hides easily in an armful and hides nowhere here, which is why a florist building one of these turns down blooms that would pass without comment in a larger piece.

"In a bag there is nothing to hide behind. We reject heads for these that would have gone into a large arrangement without anybody noticing."

Water, in a shallow bed

The foam block in a small bag is thin, and it evaporates at much the same rate as a large one, so it runs dry sooner than any other box format. A thin stream at the rim every morning is the routine, and in a warm room it wants a second top up in the evening.

Once the foam has dried through, water will not bring it back.

There is a matching mistake at the other end. The liner is shallow, so a generous pour leaves standing water with nowhere to go, and cut ends sitting in it turn sour faster than the top of the block dries out. Pour while the foam is taking it and stop the moment it is not.

Pull spent heads out as they go. In a small arrangement a single drooping stem spoils the whole object, whereas in a large one it goes unnoticed for days.

What this city does to that shallow bed

Air conditioning is the part nobody plans for. A dry stream from a vent takes moisture off the top of the block faster than the room temperature would suggest, so a bag on a desk under an outlet in a DIFC or Business Bay office wants checking every single morning.

Floral bag standing on a narrow shelf in a Dubai apartment

Summer adds the road to it. In heat reaching 40 °C with high coastal humidity the bag travels in insulated packing and never stands in direct sun, and delivery across the city runs 2 to 4 hours, all of which that small water reserve has to cover.

Orders start at 250 AED, and payment goes by Apple Pay or cash to the courier.

Apartments in Marina, JBR and Downtown are where the format earns its place. A bag takes a shelf edge instead of a table, and in a flat where every surface is already in use that is the difference between a gift being kept out and a gift being moved into a corner on the second day. Hours run 9 AM to 10 PM.

Family dates at home are the other regular. The bouquet is already on the dining table by then, and a bag goes into a bedroom or a hallway where it belongs to one person instead of to the room.

Flowers in a small bag in Dubai are counted by planting positions rather than by stems promised, and that count is fixed before anything is cut. The room it will stand in and whether there is a vent above it change the planting more than the occasion does, so both belong in the order.
