The date that comes back every year

Anniversary roses counted out on a florist's bench in Dubai

An anniversary returns to the same person every single year, and that is what makes it hard. Most orders for anniversary flowers in Dubai open with one question from our side of the counter: what did you send last time, and what did she do with it?

Nobody remembers their fourth birthday bouquet. An anniversary bouquet sits in memory beside every one before it. Send red roses in the same kraft wrap three years running and the fourth year stops reading as a tradition.

A twelfth bouquet is judged against eleven.

The number changes the brief

First, fifth, tenth and twenty-fifth are not four sizes of one order. They sit at different points in a life and in a budget. A first anniversary is usually two people who have just paid for a wedding; a twenty-fifth is often paid for by grown children.

Year one we build small and specific: the wedding flowers again, if you can name them. Peonies, garden roses, one variety in one colour — it works because it points at a date you both remember.

Five years is where the repeat problem bites. The novelty has gone and the habit has not formed. Couples often move to a vase piece here and keep it for years. This is the year to change the object rather than the amount — a box instead of a wrap, one variety instead of a mix.

Ten behaves like a round number: people spend more, tell others, build an evening around it. That is where stem counts start to matter, because ten years and ten roses is a neat idea the tenth year can still carry.

Counting by the year, and where it stops

Matching the stem count to the year has a ceiling. One for the first, five for the fifth, ten for the tenth — all of it fits in a hand and a vase. Fifteen still works. Twenty-five is a large object: at 70 cm it takes both arms and a wide vessel, and a rented flat rarely holds one. Fifty is furniture. Past twenty-five the count stops being a message and becomes a logistics problem, so we go to one stem per five years, or one piece with the number on the card.

  • Change the wrapping — kraft one year, a box the next, a vase piece after that.
  • Change the variety — roses, then peonies in season, then ranunculus or tulips.
  • Change the length — 60 cm and 90 cm are different objects at the same count.
  • Keep the number — the year is the one thing that should not move.

"The first question on an anniversary is never what to send. It is what you sent last year."

Years here, or a week here

Where a couple lives changes the order more than the number does. Visitors have none of the infrastructure residents take for granted. A pair here for years own a vase, know which flowers fail in a July car park, and will tell you what died on them last time.

Anniversary bouquet handed over at a restaurant table, Dubai

A couple here for a week is a different job: no vase, no fridge, a suitcase at the end. We send a box set in wet foam, so nothing needs a vessel. Ask the front desk to hold it at reception. A bouquet delivered to an empty room in August loses most of a day before anyone thinks to open that door.

Summer sets the limit on all of it. From June to September the city runs to 40 °C with coastal humidity, so we pack insulated, keep the car cold and hand over at the door itself.

The handover

A restaurant surprise has to be arranged with the restaurant as much as with us. Someone there takes delivery, keeps the flowers off the kitchen line and brings them out on cue. Give us the booking name and the table time, and we land it thirty to sixty minutes before you sit down.

Evening traffic is the part people underestimate. Between 6 and 9 PM the run from Business Bay out to Marina can take twice what it does at noon, which is exactly the window every anniversary dinner sits in.

"Tell me the reservation time and I will tell you when the courier leaves."

At home the timing is looser and still worth thinking through. We deliver 9 AM to 10 PM in a window of 2–4 hours, enough to get a bouquet into the flat before anyone is back. Prices for anniversary flowers in Dubai start at 250 AED, by card, Apple Pay or cash to the courier. Tell a manager the year number, the address and the hour that matters, and we keep a note of it, so that next year's bouquet starts from this one.
