Flowers in an envelope in Dubai: one layer, and nowhere to hide

Florist laying tulip stems in a single layer on a paper sheet in a Dubai workshop

A round bouquet is built in the hand and turned as it grows. An envelope is built flat on the bench, stem by stem, and every stem stays in the same plane from the first to the last. That single difference decides how it is made, how it travels and what it can be used for.

In a spiral bouquet a florist can bury a weak head in the second row and nobody sees it. A flat fan has no second row. Each stem sits beside its neighbours with its own patch of paper behind it, so a bruised petal, a short stem or a head that has already started to open reads at once.

The lengths have to match. Cut them by eye and the fan sags at one edge the moment the paper is lifted, which is the commonest fault in a rushed build and the easiest one to catch on arrival.

Glue and staples belong on the outside of the fold, never near the stems.

What to look at when it arrives

Turn it over. A clean build has a flat spine, one line of fixing, and a paper edge that has not been pressed into the heads by a tight band. Thirty seconds while the courier is still there settles all of it, and none of it can be settled later.

The address does half the work

Delivery runs 2 to 4 hours and there is no water inside the envelope, so the hour of the handover carries more weight here than with any wrapped bouquet. In summer the city gets to 40 °C and the coast adds humidity, which is why these go out with insulated packing, never sit in the sun, and get built close to the run rather than early in the morning.

Four things we ask for before the build:

  • The hour somebody will actually take it.
  • The tower and floor. Downtown, Business Bay, JBR and Palm Jumeirah all want a phone number as well, because the lobby will not let a courier up without a call.
  • Whether the recipient stays at the address afterwards or goes straight out, since the stems need trimming and water within the hour.
  • The card text, sent as writing. It sits inside the same fold and gets read before the flowers are lifted out, so a name spelled from a phone call is the one mistake that shows.
Flat flower envelope with a card on an office desk in DIFC in Dubai

DIFC offices are the easiest run of all. A flat parcel goes past a front desk, through a lift and onto a desk beside a laptop without anybody rearranging it, and the recipient is not left carrying an armful around the floor for the rest of the afternoon.

Greenhouse tulips from the UAE do most of this work. They have the side profile the plane needs, they take a single layer without fighting it, and a short cut of them stands in whatever glass is in the office kitchen.

"I build envelopes last in the day. There is no water in one, so the hour it leaves the bench is the hour it starts counting."

Orders start from 250 AED, payment goes by Apple Pay or cash to the courier, and we work 9 AM to 10 PM on GMT+4.

Send the hour, the floor and a number that gets answered. If the answer is that nobody will be at the address until evening, say so and we will move the build to the evening, because this is one format where an extra four hours on a reception counter cannot be repaired at the door.
