Spray roses in Dubai: colour, ageing and the light they sit under

A cluster stem does not fade all at once. The central bloom goes over while the side buds are still tight, so on any given day the bunch carries flowers at three or four stages. The eye reads that mixture as a garden bunch rather than as something past its best.

That has a practical consequence in a flat where the air conditioning runs all day. Cut the spent central head off at the base and the neighbouring buds speed up within a day. Single-headed roses hold nothing in reserve, and once the head drops the stem is finished. The arrangement changes shape twice during its week, which is either the appeal or the annoyance, depending on who is looking at it.

Colour is the other half of the decision.

Cream and white shades hold their outline against pale paint and vanish against gloss white, so they need a darker surface behind them or a coloured vase under them. Peach and apricot varieties warm up oak, rattan and beige. They also photograph without the pink cast that pure white takes on under a kitchen lamp. Dusty lilac and lavender are the fussy ones: under warm bulbs the pigment drifts towards grey and the bunch looks tired by evening even when the flowers are perfectly fresh. Daylight brings the colour straight back, which is why the same bunch can be judged twice in one day and get two different verdicts.

What this city adds to the equation

Two things here change the answer. Summers run up to 40 °C with high humidity along the coast, and almost every room the flowers end up in is cooled hard. In summer we add insulated packing and keep the bunch out of direct sun on the way over. Neither step helps once the vase is standing under a vent, which is the one thing worth passing on to the recipient.

Delivery takes 2 to 4 hours across Downtown, Marina, JBR, Business Bay, Palm Jumeirah and DIFC. An office bunch in DIFC is unwrapped at a desk within minutes of arriving, while a hotel order spends longer travelling inside the building. Stage matters more in the second case.

We work 9 AM to 10 PM. An order that depends on a particular stage rather than a particular shade is worth placing a day or two early.

Business handovers are their own kind of work here. A bunch on a reception counter is seen from one side, at standing height, by people walking past it instead of sitting with it. That rules out the low wide build which suits a dining table, and favours a taller, denser cluster with the heads facing outward. Warm counter lighting also rules out the fussy lilacs, since by late afternoon they read grey. Family dates in Marina or JBR take the opposite advice, because the bunch is looked at from above and up close.

Tight varieties arrive closed and open over several days. Looser cups show their centre on the first evening and give everything at once. Which of the two you want depends on the date, so ask what stage the stems are at on the day of the order.
