Premium sets in Bali: when a box is the wrong answer

Sets are heavy and bulky compared with any part of them. Someone flying the next morning, or crossing the island with a driver and a boot already full, will quietly resent a box of several kilos. In that case the centre delivered on its own does the same job and asks nothing of the person receiving it.

A villa is different from a suitcase.

For a recipient staying a fortnight the weight stops mattering, and the box becomes the better gift because it has somewhere to sit and something to sit on. For a guest checking out on Sunday the same box is a problem dressed as a present, and the difference between those two cases is a single line in the order.

A set also suits semi-public occasions, where other people will see the gift, better than it suits something private between two. Premium sets in Bali are most often bought for a person who already owns everything obvious, and what that person notices is not the number of items but whether they were chosen together.

Orders start from 650000 IDR, with payment through QRIS, GoPay, OVO or DANA, or in cash to the courier. Delivery in Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur takes 90 to 150 minutes, Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours, and we work from 9 AM to 10 PM.

Three questions settle most orders:

• Whether the box stays at the address or travels on.
• Who else is in the room when the lid comes off.
• What is meant to still be there in a year, since that alone decides whether the centre is fresh or preserved.

What the season changes

The wet months run from November to March and the drier ones from April to October. Above 30 °C, and in the humidity that comes with it, we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, and chocolate in a set is planned around the route rather than around the photograph. A set built on fresh stems is assembled on the day it goes out, while one built on preserved roses can be made up in advance.

The fresh centre comes from what reaches the island. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm carry the large arrangements, macrophylla hydrangea fills volume with a single stem, ranunculus and lisianthus work the middle, and orchids hold longest inside a closed box. A cheap satellite beside matched roses reads as a mistake rather than as thrift, so items come out of a set more often than they go in.

There is one more case where a single object beats a box. When the occasion is private and the gift is handed over with nobody else watching, the arithmetic of a set stops working, because half of what a set does is be seen. A large arrangement on its own carries that moment better, and it costs less to send.

There is a quick test before ordering. Take the most expensive item out of the description in your head and see whether the remainder still means anything. If what is left is a handful of unrelated small objects, the set needs rebuilding rather than adding to.

Send the address, the hour and the name of whoever can take the box if the recipient is out. A fitted tray survives the drive to Uluwatu perfectly well and survives an afternoon standing at a gate rather less.
