101 roses in Bali: the bundle, the basket, and the drive in between

A hundred stems tied into a single bundle is one way of spending that number of flowers, and it is not automatically the best of them. The bundle wins on impact at the moment of handing over. It loses on nearly everything that happens afterwards.

The same count set into soaked foam on a solid base behaves differently from the first minute. Every stem is fixed, nothing swings when the vehicle turns, and the whole arrangement travels standing up. On a run to Uluwatu or Tabanan that takes 3 to 4 hours, that is not a decorative distinction.

What the basket gives away is the transfer. Nothing goes into anybody's arms, and the gesture reads as an arrangement that arrived rather than flowers that were handed over. If the point of the order is a moment in front of other people, that is the whole thing being traded away.

Stem length is the second trade, and it surprises people. In foam the stems are cut short, so the flowers sit lower and a hundred of them read smaller than a hundred in a bundle held at chest height.

What the island adds to that choice

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur come in at 90 to 150 minutes, and we deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, and the rainy season runs November to March, when the last stretch from a gate to a door is wet whatever we pack.

A bundle asks something of the address at the far end. A basket asks nothing.

Water is the other half of that. A bundle of this size drinks more than any single vessel in a holiday house will hold, so somebody is topping it up twice a day or watching it fail. Foam wants a thin stream poured at the edge each morning until the top stops taking it, which is a smaller job and a much easier one to explain to a housekeeper or a host.

That is the practical version of the argument, and on resort addresses it decides most orders. A villa in Berawa or a room in Nusa Dua may have nothing wide enough to stand a hundred stems in, and the recipient finds that out while holding them.

• Where the flowers will be standing an hour after they arrive, and whether that surface is a floor, a table or a counter.
• Whether anyone will be present, or whether the arrangement waits somewhere until the evening.
• The distance: Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run long enough that a fixed build is worth considering on its own.
• Whether the moment of handover is part of the gift, because that single answer settles the format.

The rain changes which one arrives well

Paper takes water along the whole circumference of a bundle this size. Once the collar has softened it stops holding the edge of the dome, and the outline you paid for is the first thing to go.

Foam does not care about any of that.

The basket also lets everything be set down indoors immediately, which is worth more in the wet months than it sounds. Nobody stands in a garden in the rain holding a hundred roses while deciding what to do with them.
