Small flower baskets in Bali: what to check in the first minute
Everything about a small arrangement is seen from close range and mostly from above. There is no distance to hide a shortcut in, no silhouette doing the work for it, and nothing that looks acceptable from across a room. Whatever went wrong at the bench is visible to the person who opens the box.
That makes this the one size worth inspecting properly on arrival. It takes under a minute and it happens while the courier is still standing there, which is the only moment when anything can be done about it. Nobody enjoys this conversation and everybody prefers it to the alternative. The alternative is a message three days later about an arrangement that was never right in the first place.

Look down into it rather than at it. The heads should sit at even heights with no foam visible in the gaps between them, since a small block leaves nowhere for a low head to disappear into. Greenery should close the rim the whole way round, not just on the side that was photographed. The base has to be flat enough that the basket does not rock when it is set down on a desk, which matters more in this size than in any other because it gets moved constantly. Four seconds of looking covers all of that.
Then use a finger.
Press the foam gently at the edge, where it is exposed under the greenery. It should feel cool and damp and should spring back under the pressure. Foam that crumbles or stays dented has already dried further than it should have, and that is worth saying at the door rather than discovering later.
Three things to check while the courier waits:
- The heads sit level and no foam shows between them.
- The greenery closes the rim all the way round.
- The base sits flat and the foam is cool and damp at the edge.
Climate, the drive and the week after
Humid air here is on this format's side. A small block presents a large surface for its volume, so it would dry quickly in a dry climate, and the moisture in the air slows that down noticeably. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element, and the base leaves the workshop fully soaked. What still catches people out is moving air rather than heat. A fan or an open corridor pulls water out of an exposed block faster than the sun does.
From November to March the rain decides where a small basket can stand. An open villa terrace is a worse posting than any room indoors.
Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur are 90 to 150 minutes from the workshop, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. On the long routes the basket spends most of the drive closed, which is why we soak it fully rather than topping it up at the door. A small arrangement lasts about as long as fresh cut stems in a vase, and the thing that shortens it is a forgotten morning rather than the flowers.
