Florist assembling an occasion bouquet in Bali

A bouquet is doing a job: congratulations, apology, welcome, get well. Sorting by occasion settles size, scent, colour and delivery hour in one step. The correction we make most often on the phone is size — a 120 cm bouquet ordered for a hospital room, or a small box for a fiftieth birthday.

Compare four cards. A birthday wants volume and colour, something that reads as a party when the door opens; a maternity ward wants the opposite, compact and low-scent with nothing that sheds; an apology should be quiet and clearly considered; and a bouquet for a host should need no vase and no work.

What the occasion decides

Scent is the first fork. Lilies fill a dining room. In a hospital room, or a small bedroom under air conditioning, they are wrong. Ranunculus, lisianthus and macrophylla hydrangea carry almost no smell, which is why they go to get-well and new-baby orders.

Then shape and colour: housewarming flowers stay on a surface, so a low box works better than a tall armful, and red roses to a colleague read as a declaration whatever the card says. A graduate stands outside holding a certificate, a phone and someone else's sunglasses, so a 120 cm Ecuadorian rose bouquet is a burden rather than a gift.

"I ask two things before building anything: what happened, and where is it going. Answer those and the bouquet is half made."

Why occasions run long here

A wedding around Jimbaran or Ubud is rarely one evening. The welcome dinner, the ceremony and the farewell all want different flowers. Inside the same week somebody has a birthday, and somebody's parents arrive for the first time. We often take four or five orders against what the sender first described as one booking. Couples come back years later on the date they married here, wanting something waiting at the table, and if they send a wedding photograph we match the palette to it.

Long stays do the same to the ordinary calendar. With no family dinner behind them, 8 March, Mother's Day and New Year land as ordinary weekdays. People who take a villa for a season and work remotely from Canggu or Berawa order bigger for those dates than they do at home. They also change villas far more often than phone numbers, so give us the pin for this week's address.

Two dates that override the plan

Nyepi is the day nothing moves.

The Balinese Day of Silence closes the island for twenty-four hours: no traffic, no work, no flights in or out of the airport, no deliveries. If a birthday falls on it, we deliver the evening before and mark the card.

Galungan sits on no fixed date. It returns every 210 days on the Pawukon calendar, so it drifts through the Western year. Streets fill with penjor, the tall bamboo poles that curve over the road, and traffic slows for several days.

The ten occasions here

Occasion bouquet delivered to a villa in Seminyak
  • Birthday — volume and colour, sized to the room.
  • Anniversary — red or white roses, or the wedding palette.
  • Valentine's Day — book early, rose stock is imported.
  • 8 March — spring tones, small enough for a desk.
  • Mother's Day — not one date: Mothering Sunday in the UK, May in the US, Hari Ibu on 22 December here.
  • Graduation — light to hold, bright to photograph.
  • Housewarming — a finished box, nothing to arrange.
  • Apology — plain, generous, no novelty add-ons.
  • Get well — low scent; check the ward allows them.
  • New Year — order days ahead, late December is busiest.

Timing, heat and payment

Couriers run 9 AM to 10 PM, and Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90–150 minutes from confirmation, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas need three to four hours. Pick the hour as carefully as the day: a 9 PM bouquet misses the dinner it was for.

Above 30 °C, with humidity behind it, we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element. Bali runs on GMT+8, so set the slot against island time. Prices are in IDR from 650,000, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

Between November and March the afternoon rain pushes the long runs to Uluwatu and Tabanan back by an hour, so book the day before for anything tied to a fixed hour: a restaurant table, a ceremony, a flight out. We build flowers for every occasion in Bali to a delivery slot, so a day's notice lets a manager ask what happened and who it is for.
