Housewarming flowers in Bali: sized for the next move

Potted orchid delivered to a villa gate in Canggu

A villa in Canggu for six months, then a lease near Uluwatu, then somewhere quieter towards Ubud. People here change address more often than they change scooters. We take housewarming orders twice a year for the same person, and the second one goes to a lane we have never driven down.

That makes the gift a different object from the one you would send to a flat somebody owns. It travels light.

Cut stems ask for a vase, and a rented villa rarely has one. A potted plant arrives finished. It stands on the terrace table the day it lands and packs into a box the day the tenancy ends. Orchids in a ceramic pot handle that better than cut stems, because the humidity that shortens a bouquet is the air they grow in.

Getting to the door

Nobody here gives a street number.

The address arrives as a map pin in WhatsApp, and that pin is the real address. Without a phone number the courier stands outside a locked gate. Most pins stop at a shared entrance serving four or five villas, so we also ask for the name painted on the gate and a number that answers.

The last kilometre is its own problem. Lanes off the main road in Berawa or Pererenan are unsealed, and from November to March they hold ruts deep enough to stop a loaded bike. Building work closes them without notice. A gate that opened last month sits behind a pile of sand. That is why Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes while a villa past Uluwatu or Tabanan takes three to four hours, and why we call ahead rather than guess.

Ask the new tenant which gate they use, because plenty of compounds keep a service entrance the residents never touch. Couriers run 9 AM to 10 PM on island time, GMT+8. The easiest window is early, before the household rides out.

Air conditioning or open terrace

Villas here are rarely one climate. A bedroom runs cold and dry all night under a split unit while the living room has no fourth wall, and a plant that settles in one of those rooms will struggle in the other.

Cold rooms dry the air fast. Anything with thin petals loses water under a vent within a day. Waxy leaves and thick petals cope. Ask where the plant will stand before choosing it, because that narrows the list faster than the budget does.

  • Air-conditioned room — phalaenopsis orchid, sansevieria, ZZ plant: low light, little water, indifferent to a vent.
  • Covered terrace — dendrobium, anthurium, calathea: shade and moving air suit all three.
  • Open terrace in full sun — potted frangipani, bougainvillea, a small pandan; nothing with a soft petal.
  • Cut flowers, if wanted — lisianthus, ranunculus and macrophylla hydrangea in a box carrying its own water, away from the vent.
Housewarming plant on an open terrace in Bali

Cut flowers still have a place at a housewarming. A low box on the table looks right on the first evening, when nothing is unpacked and the kitchen is a suitcase on the counter. They rarely last past the weekend in this heat, so many senders take both, a plant for the corner and a small box for that night.

"The first question on a housewarming order is how long the lease runs. Six months and it gets a pot that will still be alive at the end of it, two weeks and it gets a box for one evening."

— JFLOO florist

Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element into anything cut, and on the three-hour runs inland that element is doing real work by the time the bike arrives. Pots need less of that, though the courier keeps them off the hot rack.

When several people are sending

Housewarmings here run collective. Four separate orders can land on one table meant for one bouquet. Whoever moved in has three friends in the same lane, and the party appears in a group chat two hours ahead. If you know the others are sending stems, take the pot instead, and it will still be standing in that room when they come back.

Orders start at 650,000 IDR. QRIS, GoPay, OVO and DANA all go through from an Indonesian number, cards work from abroad, and the courier takes cash at the gate.

Order the day before if the moving-in dinner has a fixed hour. Send the pin, the gate name and a number that answers. We build housewarming flowers in Bali around a room and a lease length, so tell us where it will stand and how long the tenancy has left.
