Roses in a glass dome in Bali: the piece that stays put

Preserved roses under a glass dome in a Bali bedroom

Ask what a villa room here does to a flower, and the answer comes back as air. Doors stay open down one wall all day. From November through March the draught crossing the terrace carries water in it, and anything porous standing in that draught takes the water on.

Under a cloche the head sits in its own pocket of air. That pocket changes slowly — it meets the room through one seam at the base rather than across the whole surface of every petal, which is the difference between a piece that softens by month four and one that does not.

These are real roses with glycerine where the sap was, and that swap is what makes a wet room the enemy. The cover is the answer to it. Air conditioning does the same job when it is running. The trouble is that in most villas here it runs at night and stops at breakfast, and the doors go back open. The cloche is on duty through the fourteen hours a day when nobody in the house is thinking about the flowers at all.

Glass stays glass

Glass has one property that only shows up on a long timeline. It does not scratch under a cloth and it does not yellow in sun. A cloche on the bright side of a room in Seminyak looks the same in its third year as it did the day it was carried in, and the roses under it are the only part that has quietly changed colour.

The price is fragility

Glass is heavy and glass breaks. Neither is a problem on a shelf; both are a problem between here and the shelf, and Bali's last hundred metres are where that gets decided.

The lanes off the main roads in Berawa, Pererenan and out towards Uluwatu are part unsealed. We pack the dome and its base separately, brace the box, and the driver takes the ruts at walking pace. A run to Uluwatu or Tabanan is three to four hours partly because nobody is going to hurry a glass box down a rutted track.

Couriers hand this one over.

There is no leaving it at a gate or with a security post. Someone has to be at the address, or a villa manager who will carry it in and set it down flat. A working phone number matters more here than a precise address. If the recipient is out on a scooter for the afternoon, tell us, and we will hold the slot rather than send a driver down a lane for nothing.

"Every dome that has come back to me broke the same way — lifted by the glass instead of the base. Once it is standing on a shelf, nothing happens to it for years. Tell whoever unpacks it to take it by the wood."

Who ends up with one

Long-stay residents order these: people who have signed for a year in Canggu or Sanur, and households that stopped counting the months a while ago. It is not a purchase for two weeks in a rental.

Tall glass dome with preserved roses on a villa console, Bali

A dome has one good face and a heavy base, so it wants a surface where it can stand still and be looked at from the front. Pick the surface before you pick the colour. That is most of the decision.

  • Bedroom — cooled overnight, out of the through-draught, nothing walking past it.
  • Desk or study shelf — the piece someone actually looks at every day.
  • Hallway console against a wall — the front-on angle the shape is built for.
  • Not an open-sided pavilion or a poolside table — outdoors the cover has nothing to do.

Most of what goes under glass here is one head or a small cluster, which is what the shape flatters. A taller dome over a fuller arrangement suits a console that can take the height, and the base is heavy enough that it will not walk when a door slams in a cross-breeze.

Ordering runs from 9 AM to 10 PM, island time, which is GMT+8. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes from confirmation, and Berawa, Kuta, Legian, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Ubud sit on the same run sheet. Prices are in IDR from 650,000, through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Nothing under the glass is waiting on water, so roses in a glass dome can be booked a week out and held for the date you name — we would rather build the piece the morning it travels than leave it sitting packed in a box.
