The brief and the door: how a standing flower order actually works

Weekly flowers arranged in a low vase in a villa in Bali

Everything difficult about a repeating order happens before the first delivery. What gets agreed in that first exchange decides whether the arrangement still suits a household in month six or starts irritating somebody by week three.

Two things carry most of the weight, and neither of them is a flower name.

A brief outlives a list of favourites

Naming five favourite flowers rarely survives a season. Supply moves, a variety comes in badly for a month, and a florist is then stuck between the list and the shelf. A brief written in terms of colour weight, height and what must never arrive holds up all year, and it leaves room to work with everything Bali supply offers: imported roses 60 to 90 cm, Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm, seasonal peonies, ranunculus, lisianthus, macrophylla hydrangea, orchids and tropical foliage.

Scent belongs in that brief. Some varieties fill a small room completely, and a person working from a villa notices it within an hour of the delivery, whatever the arrangement looks like.

"We ask what the room looks like before we ask what they like. A windowsill in Canggu and a shaded table in a villa want two different heights."

— JFLOO florist

Vases are the third line. Tall stems arriving at a house that owns one short jug get cut down every single week, and the height that was paid for goes out with the trimmings.

Size is easiest to pin down as a number. Two households can use the word medium and mean arrangements that differ by half a metre, so a height and a rough stem count save an argument in month two.

Delivery is where it fails

Everything else about a subscription is straightforward. An address is not.

Flowers left at a gate or standing in the sun lose days of life, and unlike a single order this happens again and again on a fixed schedule. The gate is the specific problem here, because a good part of the island is villas behind them.

Distance sets the rest. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas stretch to 3 or 4 hours, which is long enough that a weekly slot should be agreed once and left alone.

Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, and both work far better than an hour in the shade at the receiving end. Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM.

Rain changes the handover rather than the flowers. Between November and March a box left outside carries a risk it does not carry in the drier months from April to October, which is the part of the year when an unattended drop point actually holds up.

Where it works without anyone thinking about it

Hotels in Nusa Dua handle a repeating order well, because there is always somebody on shift and the flowers go inside within minutes. Restaurants and small offices do the same for their own reasons: staff on shift, a surface that stays clear, and a room that people walk through all day rather than once in the evening.

A house with a housekeeper or a manager is the other reliable case, and a good part of what we run as a flower subscription in Bali is exactly that: an owner abroad, a staffed villa, and flowers arriving for whoever is actually in the room that week.

Orders start from 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Send the district, the weekday and the name of the person who opens the gate, and the brief can be three lines long.
