Oversized designer bouquets in Bali: the first ten seconds

Nobody counts the stems. What registers when a villa door opens is that the courier is holding something wider than the doorway, and that reaction happens before anyone has looked at a single flower. Everything else about this category exists to protect those ten seconds.

The first signal is silhouette against the person carrying it. A piece that runs from waist to above the shoulders and spreads past both elbows reads instantly as out of the ordinary. The same budget spent on rarer flowers at a normal size reads as a nice bouquet and stops there. Neither choice is wrong, but they are answers to different questions, and it is worth knowing which question you are asking.

The second signal is colour behaving as a block. At this size individual heads stop being visible as objects and merge into fields, so one deep tone with a single break in it carries much further than six shades mixed evenly. Pale, fine material dissolves altogether at any distance worth photographing from.

Photographs come third and matter more than people expect. A piece at this scale needs the recipient in the frame to be understood at all.

The handover itself is short by necessity. Oversized designer bouquets in Bali are taken in both hands, held for a frame or two, and passed on almost immediately. It helps a great deal if the person receiving one already knows where it is going to stand.

An oversized piece takes the room three ordinary orders would occupy, so it travels alone. It goes upright in the passenger cabin with a hand on it the whole way, which sets the pace of everything else. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit inside a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 to 4 hours, and for a piece this size that figure is the honest one rather than the optimistic one. We work from 9 AM to 10 PM.

Four lines at the order stage save the whole delivery:

• The address as a map point, with a note on the entrance.
• The hour it should arrive, since a piece like this cannot wait in a car.
• Who opens the door and where it can be set down straight away.
• The approach itself: gates, steps, a garden path, a narrow turn. Every pinch point costs a few outer flowers unless the piece travels inside a protective cone, and the cone only comes off at the door.

Humid tropical air sets the rest of the terms. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, which on a long run to the south of the island is doing real work. During the rains from November to March the whole piece travels closed and gets opened under a roof, so plan the reveal indoors.

Imported roses at 60-90 cm and Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm give the height this format lives on. Macrophylla hydrangea builds diameter faster than anything else per stem, while orchids and tropical foliage hold the structure and survive the road better than the softer material sitting inside the mass.

Ask somebody to take one picture with the recipient holding it before it goes down. That frame is the whole reason for the format, and it exists for about a minute after the door opens.
