50 cm roses: getting the count right

Bouquet of medium-length roses being trimmed on a work bench

Fifty centimetres is the middle of the range and the length most shops sell by default. That makes it the one where the real decision moves elsewhere, to how many stems you order and what you expect that number to look like when it arrives.

Most ordering mistakes happen here.

Volume comes from two directions

A bouquet fills space through height and through width, and the two trade against each other. Fifteen stems at fifty centimetres read as a proper armful in a normal room. The same fifteen at forty look modest on a table, while at seventy they look thin, because the extra length spreads the same heads over more air and the gaps between them start to show.

So the count and the length are chosen together. If you move up a step in length and keep the number the same, the bouquet gets taller and looser rather than bigger.

Common errors when ordering

  • Ordering by budget alone. The shop then balances price by cutting either the count or the length, and you find out which one on delivery.
  • Assuming a round number looks fuller. Eleven well graded stems beat fifteen mixed ones, since one soft head in the front row is what the eye lands on.
  • Forgetting the greenery. Foliage and filler add width without adding stems, so a bouquet described as fifteen roses can arrive in two very different sizes.
  • Leaving the vase out of the conversation. Fifty centimetres needs something with a heavy base, and a narrow bud vase will tip.

The fourth point catches people more often than the rest.

What fifty centimetres does well

It fits a dining table without hiding the person opposite, and it fits a hallway console, a hotel desk, a shop counter. Almost every household vase takes it after a short trim. The stems are thick enough to stand upright in the hand during a presentation, and light enough that nobody's arm aches while the photographs are taken.

For a first bouquet, when you know very little about the recipient's home, this is the safe step. Nothing has to be bought, moved or borrowed to accommodate it.

Checking what arrived

Count the stems before anything else, and count the heads, since a spray variety can carry several small buds on one stem and that changes what the number means. Then press gently at the base of a bud: firm and slightly springy means the flower has time left, soft means it opened days ago. Look at the cut ends: they should be clean and pale, with no dark frayed edge.

Length is measured from the cut to the base of the bud, not to the top of the petals.

Care, briefly

Recut at an angle, use a deep vase, strip the lower leaves and change the water completely instead of topping it up. Keep the bouquet away from a radiator, direct sun and any bowl of fruit, because ripening apples give off ethylene and that ages the buds early.

Fresh roses hold one to two weeks on that routine, sometimes a little longer in a cool room.

If you are sending 50 cm roses to someone in Geneva whose home you have never seen, this length asks the fewest questions of them. That, more than anything else, is why it sells the way it does.
