Yellow baskets: the arrangement you can send to almost anyone
Most colour decisions in a flower shop are really decisions about the relationship. Red says one thing, pink softens it, white can turn solemn without warning, and each of them has to be checked against who is receiving and who else will see it standing there for a week.
Yellow carries almost none of that weight, which is the whole reason it gets ordered.
The relationships it fits
A colleague, a manager, a teacher, a doctor, a neighbour, a client, a parent. In every one of those cases a large yellow arrangement reads as a straightforward congratulation and nothing more, and nobody at the next desk starts a conversation about it. That matters more with a basket than with a bouquet, because a bouquet leaves the room in someone's arms within the hour while a standing arrangement sits in public view for days and gets discussed accordingly.
It also works when several people send together. A department, a class of students, a group of neighbours: the gesture is collective, and yellow keeps it that way rather than making it sound like one person spoke louder than the rest.
There is one belief still worth knowing about. In parts of the region a gift of yellow flowers is read as a hint at parting, and although few people now take it seriously, the association surfaces often enough that florists soften it by putting white, green or orange into the same arrangement.
What actually carries the colour
The shade is not one thing. Sunflowers give a heavy ochre with a dark centre and read as harvest rather than celebration. Gerberas give flat, even discs of pure colour that hold their tone longer than most. Chrysanthemums bring density and the longest life in foam. Tulips give the cleanest yellow of all and the shortest patience, since they keep growing after they are cut and lean towards the light.
Roses in yellow behave differently again. The outer petals of many yellow varieties pale at the margin as the bloom opens, so a rose basket that looked saturated on the first morning looks creamy by the middle of its life.
That drift is not a fault, and it is worth expecting rather than discovering.
Building it so the colour stays legible
Greenery fills more of the volume than the flowers do, and light green foliage sits so close to yellow on the spectrum that at any distance the two merge into one soft patch. Darker leaf, needled greens and a matt texture give the heads their outline back.
The weave counts too. Natural willow is a warm gingery tone and yellow flowers sitting against it lose separation at the base, so these arrangements are more often built in bleached, grey or dark containers.
Where it ends up standing
Reception desks, staff rooms, hospital wards, the corner of a hall where the light is poor. Yellow stays visible in dim conditions long after deep shades have gone flat, and in a windowless corridor it is close to the only colour that still registers as a colour.
Direct sun is the one place to avoid. The pigment fades under ultraviolet and the foam block dries roughly twice as fast on a sunny sill as it does further into the room, so the water needs topping up along the rim more often than anyone expects.
For a recipient in Geneva who works in an open-plan office, yellow baskets are the safe answer: the arrangement is seen by twenty people and says nothing to any of them except congratulations.
