Giant rose bouquets: the week after the photographs
The arrival is the easy part. Someone carries the piece in, the recipient holds it for as long as the camera needs, and then it goes on the floor against a wall. What happens in the following hour decides whether those roses are still worth looking at on Friday.
Hardly anyone plans that hour in advance.
Nothing in the house will hold it whole
A spiral of a hundred and more stems has a base wider than the mouth of any domestic vase. Pushing it in anyway crushes the outer stems and lifts the inner ones clear of the water, which is why a large piece so often wilts on one side while the other side looks fine.
Split it instead. Three or four containers, each taking a handful you can actually grip, keep every cut end under water.
Dividing the bouquet also puts it to better use. One mass in a hallway is a single event that everybody walks past, while four smaller arrangements carry the same flowers into the kitchen, the bedroom and a desk, and the gift lasts in the memory rather longer.
Do it the same evening rather than the next morning. Recut every stem at an angle, strip all leaves below the waterline, and change the water completely each day instead of topping it up. Roses drink more in the first twenty four hours than in the rest of the week put together, and a tall container can be dry by breakfast. If a stem still stands limp after all that, cut it shorter and give it a deep drink on its own for an hour.
Why the stems arrive thirsty
Roses travel dry. Heads are packed close, stems are bound, and the whole piece may spend most of a day out of water before it reaches anyone.
That is normal, and it has one consequence worth knowing. Air draws into the cut end and lodges in the stem, the neck below the bud loses pressure and folds over, and once a head has dropped that way it does not come back up. Unwrapping the piece on arrival, rather than in the evening, removes most of the risk.
The room has to give something up
A large rose piece needs floor space and a clear approach to it. In a small flat it takes the corner where people put their bags, and it will be knocked at least once a day.
Heat is the other cost. A radiator under a windowsill or a warm draught from a vent shortens a rose week to a rose weekend, and direct sun does the same by opening every bud at once.
Ordering one that survives the week
Ask for a single variety. Mixed varieties in this volume open at different speeds, so by the fourth day part of the bouquet is still in tight bud while the rest is shedding.
Ask also for the stage of opening you want on the day, not on the day of delivery. Roses sent for an event that evening are cut tighter than roses meant to sit in a hall for a week, and a good florist will ask you that question first.
Giant rose bouquets in Geneva are bought for the moment a door opens, and they repay that cost within the first minute. Everything after it is ordinary maintenance: clean water, a cool corner, a fresh cut every second day. Where the recipient has no floor to spare or a long journey home ahead, half the size and a proper vase will serve them better than a piece they have to dismantle in a corridor.
