Standard roses: how a plain bunch is put together

Roses laid in a spiral during assembly, stems fanning out below the tie

One bud on one straight stem, petals wound tightly around the centre. Nothing about the flower is unusual, which is exactly why the build shows: with a single repeated element and no foliage to hide behind, every shortcut in the assembly stays visible.

Most people never look. It is worth learning what to look at once.

The spiral

A florist does not gather standard roses in a fist. Each stem is laid across the previous one at the same shallow angle, always in the same direction, and the bunch turns in the hand as it grows.

Done properly, the stems below the binding point fan out into a clean spiral and the bunch stands on its own on a table without being held. Done badly, the stems cross at random, the bundle is thicker at the tie than it needs to be, and it topples the moment nobody is holding it.

The visible test takes a second. Look down at the bunch from directly above: the heads should sit at one level, forming a slight dome rather than a flat disc, with each bloom facing outwards from the centre.

What a rushed build leaves behind

Heads at different heights are the first sign, because levelling them means measuring and cutting each stem individually rather than trimming the whole bundle at once.

Guard petals are the second. Every rose arrives with one or two coarse outer petals protecting the bud, and they are meant to be removed by hand at the shop before the bunch is tied. A bunch full of them looks tired on arrival for no reason other than time not spent.

The third sign is a binding that has been pulled too tight. Stems bruise where the tape crushes them, the bruise darkens over the following days, and the flowers above it stop drinking properly. A binding should hold the spiral without denting anything.

A tied bunch of cream roses standing unsupported on a table

The last one is invisible until you get the bunch home. Leaves left low on the stem will sit below the waterline, foul the vase within a day and block the stems from inside, and stripping them is a job the shop should have done, not the recipient.

Colour, count and what they say

Red is still read as one specific message, which is why it goes badly to a colleague and well to almost nobody else. White and cream are neutral enough for a formal occasion, a handover or a hospital visit. Pale pink and peach hold up best under warm evening lighting at home, while cool lilac shades turn grey under the same bulbs.

Below about fifteen stems the eye counts individual flowers, and above that it stops counting and sees colour and mass instead, which is the real difference between a modest gift and a statement.

Standard roses travel better than nearly anything else in the shop, since a tight bud protects itself. Ask that the box be opened as soon as it reaches the recipient in Geneva rather than in the evening, then recut the stems under running water and fill the vase deep.
