Baskets with tulips: a seasonal format, and when a bouquet is the better answer

Low basket of tulips on an office desk

Tulips reach the shop in the cold half of the year and leave it in late spring. Outside that window they can still be found, in fewer colours and at a different price, but the flower that arrives is rarely as firm as the one that comes in season. A basket shows that up more than a wrapped bunch does, because every head sits fixed at the height it was given.

Softness turns into a lean, and a lean in foam cannot be corrected.

What the format is good at

The case for a basket is the person at the other end. No vase is needed, nothing is cut, no water is changed. The stems stand in soaked florist foam with water in the liner beneath, and the whole thing can be put down on a table and left there. For a hospital room, an office desk, or somebody who has never owned a vase, that removes the awkward part of receiving flowers.

Tulips also sit low and wide by nature. The arrangement clears the sightline across a table, which taller flowers in a basket rarely manage.

Where it gives ground to a bouquet

A cut tulip keeps growing after it leaves the bulb, and it turns towards light while it does. In a vase both can be handled: trim the stems every couple of days, turn the vase each evening, wrap the bunch in paper for an hour to straighten it. In foam only the turning is available. Stems cannot be shortened once they are seated, and a stem pulled out will not go back into the same channel, since the hole has been worked open and no longer feeds it. So a tulip basket loosens and rises over its week, while a tulip bouquet can be kept in order.

That is the honest trade. Convenience for the recipient, a slightly shorter and less controllable life for the flowers.

There is a second point in favour of the bouquet. Tulips prefer cold water and a shallow fill, and a vase gives them exactly that, whereas foam holds a constant damp at room temperature. In a cool room the difference is small, next to a radiator it is not.

Choosing colour and count

Closed tulips read as blocks of colour rather than as individual flowers. A mixed pastel basket therefore looks like one soft mass from more than a few paces, and if the stems are meant to be told apart, two strong shades work better than five gentle ones. Double and fringed types hold detail at a distance where a plain single loses it. Green-flushed and parrot varieties change the character of a basket more than any number of extra stems will.

Tulip heads opening wide at the end of their week

More heads mostly buy width here rather than height.

The week itself

Water goes in at the rim, poured slowly until the block stops taking it, and cold from the tap beats warm. Damp foam springs back under a finger, dry foam crumbles. Once it has dried right through it takes water back reluctantly, and the flowers show that within a day.

Ripening fruit nearby shortens the life of any tulip, so a kitchen table beside a fruit bowl is the wrong surface. Direct sun and a radiator do the same job faster.

At the end the buds stop closing overnight and open right out into a star with a dark centre. People often read that as damage. It is the normal last stage, and it is worth saying so when the flowers are a gift, because the recipient may otherwise assume something went wrong. A head that has gone over comes out with its stem, and the socket is covered with a leaf.

Baskets with tulips are a late winter and spring gift, and that is the season to order them in. A recipient in Bangalore gets the arrangement built and closed, and it opens on their own table over the days that follow.
