Flower bags compared with the formats they sit next to
Three things share the same shelf and roughly the same price: a hand-tied bouquet, a round hat box and a bag with handles. They are not interchangeable, and the differences show up in ordinary situations rather than in photographs.
Start with what happens after the flowers are handed over.
Against a hand-tied bouquet
A tied bouquet has to be carried in front of the body with both arms. Anyone holding it cannot open a door, take a phone out or push a lift button without asking someone else for help.
Flower bags hang from the hand. The arm drops to the side, the piece travels at knee height, and a recipient who is halfway through a working day can keep moving with it instead of planning around it.
The bouquet wins on volume for the money. Once the stems go into a rigid container they take up internal space, so the same budget shows less width and height than an armful of the same flowers would.
Against a hat box
A hat box is the better object to look at. It sits flat on a surface, it photographs well from above, and its lid gives the recipient a moment of opening that a bag does not have.
A bag is the better object to move. Handles mean the piece can be passed along a chain of people, left at a reception desk and picked up hours later by somebody who has never handled flowers, and none of them have to work out where to grip it.
Stability differs too. Boxes are wide and low and almost impossible to knock over, whereas a tall soft-sided piece needs a rigid base to stand on its own, which is worth checking before it leaves the shop.
Size, and where the weight goes
Small versions carry easily and behave themselves in a car footwell. The trouble starts at the top of the range, because water and foam are heavy and all of that mass hangs from two narrow straps onto four fingers.
Anything above a comfortable one-handed carry stops being convenient and becomes a piece of luggage.
Height is the other measurement people forget. Add tall stems to an already tall container and the whole thing swings at hip level, catching door frames and the corners of desks.
What holds it together
There is a structure inside almost every one of these: a stiff liner, or a plain box dropped into a fabric shell. Stems are set into soaked foam or a shallow reservoir at the base, and the piece travels upright rather than lying down.
Handles should be fixed to that structure or to a reinforced rim. Straps stitched to fabric alone will pull through, usually at the least convenient moment.
When each one is the right answer
Choose the bag when the recipient has to move afterwards, when someone else will accept the delivery on their behalf, or when a courier in Bangalore is handing it over at a doorway rather than carrying it inside. Choose a box when the flowers will stay on a table and be looked at, and choose loose stems when the person receiving them enjoys arranging flowers and owns a vase they like.
