Roses in a heart box: the outline does all the work
Put a heart-shaped base next to a round one of the same width and the difference looks minor. Start seating buds and it stops being minor. A circle closes itself, while a heart has to be argued into shape head by head.
Inside sits a preserved rose, a live cut bloom whose own sap has been replaced with a glycerine-based solution. It asks for no water, keeps its petals, and lives in a closed box without trouble.
The three places the shape fails
The two upper lobes tempt a florist to fan the buds outward, and a fan opens gaps along the top of the curve. The dip between the lobes fills up and disappears if the heads there are the same size as everywhere else, so that stretch takes smaller buds and a base lifted a few millimetres under each lobe. The lower point is the hardest stretch of all, because large heads round it off and the clean angle turns into a blunt nose. Some florists build the point first and the lobes last, since the point decides how far apart the two curves can sit. Whatever slack is left gets pushed out to the sides, where the eye forgives more.
The bottom angle is where a rushed build shows up first.
Judge the piece from the side rather than from the front. Along a good outline the heads hold one height, the row at the dip does not sink, and the surface slopes gently down toward the tip. A flat slab means nobody shaped the base under the flowers.
How size changes the outline
A large heart carries its shape at a glance from across a room. In a small format the same tight seating pulls the curves toward each other until the silhouette reads as a rounded square with a bevelled bottom, and only the hint of a heart is left.
Weight arrives before anything else. A dense heart in the fifty-bud range is noticeably heavier than a round box of the same footprint, and the hands register that density faster than the eyes do.
Handing it over
A round box has a lid, and the lid buys a pause: it goes on a table, it comes off, everyone watches. Most hearts have no lid at all. The shape is already talking, so the box goes straight into someone's hands and rarely waits on a table with a note beside it.
That narrows the occasions, which turns out to be useful. A heart cannot go to a colleague on a birthday or sit on a reception counter, and it cannot be sent to an aunt for no particular reason. What is left is short: a proposal, a wedding anniversary, the evening after an argument. Nobody who receives one has to work out what was meant by it, and nobody who sends one risks the gesture being filed under politeness.
What the format costs
Scent leaves with the sap, so a heart box smells of card and glue rather than of roses. The heads are glued to the base and will not come out for rearranging later. Fresh stems packed that tightly, with no water and no greenery between them, would collapse within about a day.
Roses in a heart box hold for one to three years away from direct sun and hot radiators. Delivery is worth tying to an hour rather than a day, since a romantic gift that sat half the morning at a front desk arrives with the timing already spent. Some residential buildings in Bangalore stop couriers at the lobby, and that is better known before the order than after it.
