Baskets with chrysanthemums: the arrangement that survives the journey

Chrysanthemum basket standing flat on a car floor during delivery

Most cut flowers are at their most fragile in the half hour between the workroom and the front door. Heads knock against the roof of a car, a lift door closes on a wrapped bunch, a courier sets a box down harder than he meant to. Chrysanthemum takes all of that better than almost anything else in the shop, and in a basket it takes it better still.

Its petals are short, densely packed and attached to a firm disc, so they do not bruise the way a rose or a lisianthus does.

Why the format travels well

The stems are stiff and almost woody at the base, which means they sit tightly in a foam channel and do not shift when the basket tilts. A soaked block is heavy and low, so the whole object wants to stay upright on a car floor. Nothing about it depends on the recipient being at home within the hour.

Weight is the one thing worth knowing in advance. A block of wet foam in a lined basket is considerably heavier than the empty basket suggests, and it should be carried from underneath rather than by the handle, which on most models is glued into the rim for the look of it.

Water is the other question in transit. The liner keeps it in, but a basket carried at an angle for a long time will lose some over the rim, and a block that arrives half dry starts the week behind. Couriers keep these arrangements flat and unstacked for that reason. Nothing goes on top of a basket, ever. A dented chrysanthemum head does not spring back.

Once it is in the room

Chrysanthemum is a long-distance flower in the visual sense as well. The heads are round and dense, they hold their outline across a room, and a basket of them reads as one solid shape rather than as a collection of stems. That suits a hallway table or a reception counter, where the arrangement is mostly seen in passing. Close up it is less rewarding than a rose or a ranunculus, which is worth knowing before ordering one for a bedside table.

The colour range runs through the autumn end of the spectrum, bronze, russet, deep yellow and burgundy, alongside the whites and pale pinks. Under warm indoor light the bronzes go redder and the yellows lose some of their sharpness.

This is a format built for standing somewhere and being left alone.

The foliage carries a faint bitter green scent that some people notice in a small room and most do not. The flowers themselves give almost nothing. In a hospital room, where scent matters more than usual, that combination is generally welcome.

Care, and how long it holds

Chrysanthemum will normally outlast the block it stands in. Foam dries from the top down, so the surface can be dry while the centre is still wet, and the check is made with a fingertip at the rim rather than by eye. Water goes in slowly at the edge until the block stops taking it. Nothing else is asked of the person who received it.

Leaves left buried in the foam sour long before the flowers fade, and that smell, not wilting, is what ends these arrangements early more often than anything else. A careful build strips them before seating.

Spent heads come out with their stem and the socket is covered with a leaf, since the foam no longer feeds that point. Putting a fresh flower into an old channel gains a day at most. The rest of the arrangement carries on regardless.

Baskets with chrysanthemums are ordered for autumn occasions, for offices, and for deliveries that have to survive a long drive. A courier in Bangalore brings the whole thing assembled, and after that it needs a surface and a jug of water and nothing more.
