Peony delivery in Rotterdam: varieties, the wedding season and the "marshmallow" bud rule

The peony fits Rotterdam's character well: lush and striking, but without fuss. It looks right both at a modern loft wedding on the Kop van Zuid and on a quiet family table in Hillegersberg. The Netherlands is one of the world's largest peony exporters, and crucially the fields and glasshouses of the Westland lie right on Rotterdam's edge. So in season this is not an expensive rarity but an affordable local flower.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for celebrations. In season the supply comes from the neighbouring Dutch fields; out of season, from Chilean and New Zealand plantations through the Royal FloraHolland auction. That keeps the peony in the catalogue almost year-round.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety serves a different purpose — from a wedding arch to an intimate "thinking of you." They differ in bud shape, shade, scent and vase life.

• Sarah Bernhardt — a pastel-pink double bud up to 18 cm, honeyed scent with a note of vanilla. A 1906 classic that works in any context: wedding, birthday, business gift.
• Karl Rosenfield — a dense dark-red peony with saturated colour. Fits autumn and winter interiors with warm, wine-toned accents.
• Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson fleck at the heart. One of the most photogenic varieties, a favourite of wedding photographers.
• Coral Charm — shifts from coral-orange as it opens to creamy peach in full bloom. One of the trend varieties of the 2020s.
• Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre and a light vanilla scent. For refined romance and nude palettes.
• Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony. Larger, longer-flowering, holding 10–12 days in the vase. For premium gifts and wedding work.

Cut stage and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. A coloured bud that is still soft to the touch: squeeze it and it springs back like a marshmallow. Such a bud opens in one to two days and lasts 7–9 days. A hard, green one may not open at all; a fully open one lasts two to three days at most.

Every one of our lots is hand-selected by this criterion: only "marshmallow" buds go out. For the recipient in Rotterdam that means the full flowering cycle, not the final fading stage.

Seasonality and logistics

The natural peony season in the Netherlands is late May to June. In that short window Dutch field peonies appear, grown right beside the city, and the price is the best of the year. From July to February the supply comes from the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) — the cost is 1.5–2 times higher, but durability and quality do not suffer.

For weddings and anniversaries we align the delivery date with the expected moment of opening. A peony at a celebration should greet guests in full bloom, not as a closed bud — and that takes precise timing. In season the Dutch peony reaches the bouquet almost straight from the field, which makes the timing far easier.

Delivery specifics in Rotterdam

Rotterdam's climate is maritime: mild, damp winters around +2 to +6 °C, moderate summers of +18 to +22 °C, North Sea wind and changeable weather year-round. For the peony that is rather a plus — it dislikes heat, and Rotterdam's coolness extends the flowering. In winter bouquets travel in thermal bags with the wrapping shielding them from damp; in summer cooling inserts are rarely needed. The best season for peonies is April–June and September–October.

Peonies sell out especially fast for Moederdag — order seven to ten days ahead.

Home care

On arrival, re-cut the stems at 45°, strip the leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep them away from fruit, radiators and direct sun — ethylene and heat halve a peony's life.

Rotterdam flats are heated to +20–22 °C in winter, which for a peony means faster opening and a shorter cycle. Keep the bouquet in the coolest part of the home, ideally by a bedroom window. Fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) open best at a moderate +18–20 °C — the scent becomes clearer and lasts longer.
