Spring new year flowers: how many, how open, how big
Most orders around the spring new year are not one bouquet for one person. They are four or five deliveries in a single morning: an older relative, a neighbour, two colleagues, a teacher. Once you plan it that way, the questions change, and size stops being the interesting part.
Splitting the same budget across several modest armfuls almost always lands better than concentrating it in one showpiece.
Deciding the scale
A single-variety armful is the workhorse of this holiday. Fifteen or twenty five tulips in one colour, wrapped simply, read as generous without pushing anyone into the awkward position of owning something they have to display for a fortnight.
Mixed spring bouquets suit the household you actually visit. They take longer to assemble and cost more per stem, so they make sense where somebody will look at them closely rather than accept them at a door.
For a laid table, height is the thing people get wrong. A tall vase arrangement in the middle of a crowded table blocks the sightline between the two people most likely to be talking, and by the second course somebody has quietly moved it onto the windowsill. A low box or a flat basket sits under eye level, holds its own water in floral foam and survives being pushed around to make room for dishes.
Order the table piece and the gift bouquets as separate items. They do different jobs and the same arrangement rarely covers both.
The stage of opening
This is the detail that decides whether flowers last through the celebration or fade halfway. Tulips and hyacinths are sold at different stages, and a bunch that already looks perfect in the shop has two or three days left in it. Ask for tight buds showing colour but not yet open, and they will come up over the next day in a warm room, which is exactly when you want them at their best. Narcissi are the same, and the papery sheath on the bud should still be splitting rather than long gone. Mimosa is the exception, since it arrives already fluffed and only goes downhill from there, so it is bought as late as possible.
Say the delivery date when you order, not just the date you are paying.
Colour
The palette here comes from what actually flowers this early: white, yellow, pale green, soft lilac, and the clean strong reds of tulips. Deep burgundy and dark chocolate shades exist in the tulip range and they look expensive, but on this particular occasion they read as autumnal and sit oddly against everything else on the table.
Yellow carries no awkward second meaning in the context of the spring new year, unlike in some gifting traditions, and it is the shade people ask for most.
Practical points when ordering
Three things are worth stating in the order form rather than assuming:
- the recipient will not be home before evening, so the courier needs a time window
- the bouquet is going to an office reception and needs a container with water
- the stems should be tight buds rather than open heads
Tulips keep growing in the vase, adding a centimetre or two a day, and they lean towards the window. Nothing has gone wrong when the bouquet looks different by morning.
