Romantic bouquets: what makes one look like a declaration

Red roses set at different heights with air between the heads

Two bouquets of the same twenty five red roses can come out looking entirely different. One reads as a gift from a person, the other as something a company sends to a client, and that difference lies in three details of assembly rather than in flowers or price.

Height is the first of them.

Why a flat dome looks corporate

Set every head at the same level and you get a smooth cushion with a clean outline, which is exactly what a hotel lobby or a boardroom wants. Vary those heights by a few centimetres, let some blooms sit forward and others sink back, and identical roses stop looking machine made. An uneven surface reads as a hand at work.

The second detail is openness. A bunch of tight green buds looks unfinished and stays that way for days, whereas roses already beginning to open have visible depth in the centre of each head, and it is that depth people respond to.

Third comes density. Pressed together, heads rub at their edges in transit and the bouquet turns into one red mass with no separate flowers in it, so a hand's worth of air between blooms is not a saving on stems but a condition for seeing any of them.

Single flower or a mix

A bouquet of one flower in one shade states something simple and states it loudly. Roses are the obvious version, though peonies in early summer, ranunculus in spring and tulips at the end of winter all carry the same weight for a fraction of the fuss.

A mixed bouquet says something warmer and less formal. It suits an ordinary Tuesday rather than an anniversary, and it forgives a smaller budget because nobody counts the stems in a mix.

There is a middle path worth knowing. Take one flower as the mass, add a single contrasting texture, and the arrangement keeps the clarity of a monobouquet while looking considered rather than ordered by the dozen.

Colour beyond red

Red is unambiguous and everyone reads it the same way, which is its strength and its limitation.

Handwritten card tucked into the wrapping of a deep red bouquet

Deep burgundy and plum say much the same thing at a lower volume, and they photograph better in evening light than bright scarlet, which tends to burn out under a flash. Blush and coral read as affection without the declaration attached. Ivory and white sit closest to weddings, so on an ordinary evening they can feel oddly ceremonial.

Ask yourself what the recipient should conclude, then choose the shade that concludes it.

Small things that carry weight

Scent belongs in the decision and rarely makes it there. Many commercially grown roses have almost none, so if scent matters, garden roses, freesia, lily of the valley in season or a few stems of stock will do more than another ten roses.

Write the card yourself in your own hand. A line of your own outweighs a printed paragraph, and it is the part that gets kept after the flowers are gone.

Romantic bouquets travel badly in heat, so if the flowers are going to an address in Antwerp with a warm climate, ask for slightly tighter buds and a delivery slot late in the day. Roses that arrive already fully open have spent their best hours in the van.
