Congratulations flowers: they still have half a working day ahead of them

A birthday bouquet goes almost straight into water. This one does not. It arrives at eleven in the morning, sits on a desk under a warm ceiling light, gets photographed, moved twice, carried into a meeting room and then taken home on public transport at seven, and only after all of that does anyone think about a vase.

Everything worth deciding about the order follows from that timeline.

Stems that hold up on a desk

Roses on firm stems, chrysanthemums, carnations, alstroemeria and eustoma will go through a dry office day and still look composed in the evening. Hydrangea will not, because its leaves lose water faster than a cut stem can take it up and it collapses within a couple of hours in dry air. Tulips lean towards the nearest window and keep growing. Anything soft-stemmed and field-grown behaves the same way.

Scent needs restraining in shared rooms. One stem of lily can dominate an open-plan floor by lunchtime, and the person you meant to please is the one who has to sit next to it.

Water is easier to send with the flowers than to find later. A hat box or a lined container with foam holds its own supply, stands flat on a desk without a puddle and travels home under one arm.

Getting the size right

Size is where most orders go wrong, in both directions.

Something enormous from a colleague on the same grade reads as a bid for attention rather than a compliment, and it also traps the recipient, who now has to carry a metre of packaging through a station at rush hour. Three stems in a plastic sleeve for a promotion or a thesis defence reads as an afterthought. A medium, densely built bouquet with a clear shape avoids both readings and needs no explanation at all.

When several people are contributing, one arrangement beats four small ones. Four separate bunches end up merged in a heap on the same windowsill by the afternoon.

Colour, and what it accidentally says

Red roses in a workplace shift the message towards romance whatever the sender intended. Coral, orange, deep pink, white with strong foliage and warm yellows all carry a congratulation without that overtone.

The exception is a win that was genuinely hard fought: a sports final, a court case, a defended thesis. Strong saturated colour suits those, and understatement looks like faint praise.

For a new job, keep it moderate. The recipient is a stranger to most of the room on day one and does not want to arrive holding the largest object in the building.

Timing and the practical details

The best slot is before the person arrives rather than during the announcement itself. Flowers already waiting on a desk let them react in their own time, which matters for someone who has just spent an hour being looked at.

Give the courier a mobile number for the recipient and a second one for whoever can meet them downstairs. Office buildings in Antwerp are the usual point of failure on this kind of order, because reception will not always sign for a delivery and a locked lobby turns a timed gift into a bouquet left at a security desk.

Cut the stems again before they finally go into water. After a day in the warm, a fresh cut is what decides whether the flowers last another week or three days.
