Flowers for the start of the school year come off an autumn bench

The first days of September sit on a turn in the growing year. Summer stems are finishing, autumn stock is arriving, and the bench in a shop that week looks nothing like it did in June. Dahlias, asters, chrysanthemums, sunflowers and spray roses carry most of the orders, with garden grown material arriving in quantity. That is why bouquets for this date come out denser and darker than spring ones.

Almost none of that stock enjoys a warm corridor.

What is still standing by the last lesson

Chrysanthemum, alstroemeria, spray roses and gerbera go through a morning ceremony and the first lessons without complaint. Dahlias drink heavily and fold first, sometimes within a couple of hours of leaving water, because the stem carries a large head on very little reserve. Hydrangea behaves the same way for the same reason. A sunflower stays rigid but grows heavy, and the head starts to tip forward as the stem softens. A bouquet built for this day should be short in the stem and tight in the head, since that combination survives being carried, set down on a desk and moved again twice.

Foam based arrangements avoid the problem altogether. A box or a low basket with soaked foam arrives carrying its own water, and nobody has to find a vase in the middle of a busy morning.

Who is actually holding it

The person holding the bouquet for half an hour is often waist high to an adult. Stems longer than a child's forearm tip downwards, and a wide funnel of paper covers the face in the group photograph. A grip that a small palm can close around matters more than volume.

Weight is felt within twenty minutes, and after that the bouquet travels under an arm and creases.

Scent and pollen in a closed classroom

Lilies are the usual mistake here. In a room with thirty people and shut windows the scent turns heavy before the lesson is over, and the anthers mark a white blouse with a rust coloured stain that never washes out. If lilies are in the recipe, the anthers should be cut away before the bouquet is handed over.

Colour follows the same practical logic. White and powder shades vanish against dark jackets and the dark backdrop of a school hall, while orange, yellow and deep pink read from the far end of the yard.

The classroom by midday

By the first lesson a room can hold a dozen armfuls and two vases. Some of the flowers move into jars from the store cupboard, some lose water before the day ends, and the large baskets take over the windowsill. A teacher carries home whatever fits in one trip. That is the argument for a compact arrangement rather than a tall wrapped bouquet, since it survives the sorting, shares a jar with somebody else's stems and does not come apart when it is finally moved.

The list of recipients is longer than one teacher. Subject teachers, an after school tutor, a sports coach and a speech therapist in the junior years all receive flowers inside the same two days. Parents usually settle this between themselves, either matching modest bouquets for everyone or one larger arrangement for the class teacher and single flower bunches for the rest.

Orders for the start of the school year in Almaty land in a window of two or three days, the heaviest stretch of the calendar after the spring holidays. A named variety or an exact shade needs several days of notice, not a phone call on the morning itself.
