Flowers in a box: an arrangement that arrives finished

Fresh flowers in a round box on an office desk beside a keyboard

The container is a working part of the arrangement, not packaging around it. Soaked floral foam sits under the top layer of blooms, every short stem is pushed into it separately, and the card wall is lined so that the wet base never touches it. Nothing has to be unwrapped, cut or thrown away.

So the only decision left to the recipient is where to put it, and that decision is worth making before the order rather than after.

Rooms that suit it

Desks come first. An office has no vases, no sink anyone wants to trim stems over and nobody willing to take on the watering of a colleague's flowers, whereas a box asks for a thin stream at the rim once a day and nothing else at all. It also sits low, so two people either side of a desk can still see each other.

Dining tables are the second place, and there the shape of the container decides the result. A round box builds upward into a dome and is read from above, while a long crate holds a low line down the middle of the table and works from a seated eye.

Then there are the rooms nobody owns: a hotel, a hospital ward, a rented flat, a stand at a fair. Nothing in them can be borrowed as a vase, and a box is the one format that needs nothing borrowed.

The week you are buying

These are fresh cut flowers, so the arrangement lives the ordinary span of cut stems, somewhere between one and two weeks depending on the varieties in it and on the room.

Water is the whole of the maintenance. The foam layer is shallow, it dries from the top down, and a warm room empties it faster than anybody expects, so the honest instruction is to pour at the rim each morning and to stop when the top of the foam no longer takes it in.

Do not pour over the heads. Water that settles between petals leaves brown edges within a day, and on pale varieties it shows from the far side of the room.

Heat does the rest of the damage. A radiator shelf, the draught from an air conditioner and a sunny windowsill all pull moisture out of the petals faster than the foam can replace it, which is why the same box can look tired in one room and fresh in another.

Two boxes that look identical

A round card box also exists in a preserved version, where the heads are glued to a dry base, drink nothing and last for years. From the outside the two are hard to tell apart in a photograph.

The quickest test is weight, since a box holding wet foam is noticeably heavier than a dry one of the same size. The second is scent, because preserved blooms have none. Everything in this section is the fresh kind.

What it will not do

Stems here are cut short by design, as a long one will not stand up in a shallow bed of foam. The arrangement cannot be divided between two rooms, cannot be moved into a vase later and cannot be topped up with anything bought afterwards.

For a recipient in Almaty with no vase and no wish to acquire one, that is precisely the appeal. For someone who enjoys arranging flowers, a box is a set of decisions already taken on their behalf, and a hand-tied bouquet remains the better gift.
