New Year and Christmas 2027: the heated room sets the deadline
Winter arrangements do not fail because of the cold. They fail indoors, where the heating dries the air, a radiator sits under the window and the room runs several degrees warmer than any flower would choose. A stem that gives ten days in autumn gives four or five in that air. Everything else about a festive arrangement is a matter of preference, and this part is not.
Conifer is the component that ignores it.
What holds and what gives up first
Noble fir keeps its needles far longer than ordinary spruce and holds a resin scent for days, which is why it goes in as the base rather than as decoration. Cones, eucalyptus, berried branches, dried citrus slices and cinnamon sticks work on the same principle, since none of them depends on water. Above that base, amaryllis takes a large volume with a single stem and opens inside the arrangement. Spray roses, lisianthus, carnations and chrysanthemums are the cut flowers that tolerate dry heat best. Tulips and narcissi are already on sale in December but want cool air, and over a radiator they stretch and lean within a day, which is ordinary behaviour rather than a fault.
Hyacinth goes in for the scent and belongs at the edge. Put it there and it can come out again if the room turns out to be too small for it.
After the holiday
The conifer outlives the flowers by weeks. Once the buds are finished, the arrangement can be stripped back to fir, cones and eucalyptus and left on a windowsill into the middle of January. The foam is allowed to dry out, the decorations come off into a box, and what remains still looks deliberate rather than leftover.
That afterlife is the strongest argument for a foam base over a wrapped bouquet.
The table decides the height
A festive table is almost entirely covered by the time people sit down. A tall vase gets moved off it within half an hour. A low arrangement in a pot cover or a wooden crate stands between the plates, leaves sightlines alone and does not go over when somebody reaches across for the salt. Warm lamplight also shifts the palette, so lilac drifts towards grey, pure white yellows slightly, and red and burgundy gain weight and take the attention.
The wrapped bouquet still has its place, though it is a doorstep gift rather than a table one. Somebody has to unwrap it, cut it and find a vase, and on that particular evening nobody wants the job.
Who receives it, and when
A gift for the host should not need managing. In the middle of cooking, nobody is going to hunt for a vase and shift pans to make room, so a box or a pot cover with soaked foam removes the whole question. Older relatives are usually better served by the same thing, since it does not ask for a daily water change.
Corporate deliveries go out earlier than the calendar suggests, because offices empty before the last working day and an arrangement that arrives at a closed reception will stand there until January. Twenty matching pieces is a purchase order rather than twenty bouquets, and a week of notice is the minimum that makes it work.
Demand around New Year and Christmas collapses into a few days, and inside that window the choice is decided by what reached the cold room in time. A specific colour, a named variety or a large amaryllis needs a request placed a couple of weeks out. Closer in, a florist builds from what is in the fridge and substitutes items without asking, unless you have said otherwise.
One habit extends a winter arrangement further than any other: moving it overnight to the coolest room in the flat. In Sao Paulo that usually means the one furthest from the radiators.
