Lisianthus is sold by the branch, not by the bloom
Lisianthus and eustoma are the same plant with two names, and people routinely mistake it for a garden rose until they look at the stem. A rose carries one head. A lisianthus branch carries several buds at different stages, and they open in sequence rather than together.
That single structural fact drives everything else. Five branches put more open flowers in a vase over a week than five roses do, and the bouquet keeps changing while the later buds catch up.
Counting, and where expectations go wrong
Florists count branches. Buyers look at flowers. The gap between those two habits causes most of the disappointment in this category.
A branch typically carries two to five heads, some open, some tight, and stronger grades carry more. So the useful question at the point of order is not only how many stems, but how many of the heads on them are already open.
- Three branches read as a small bouquet, because there are roughly ten flowers on them.
- Seven to nine give real volume from a modest stem count.
- Fifteen branches make an armful that will not fit an ordinary household vase.
A bouquet of mostly closed buds looks restrained on day one and generous on day three. Sometimes that is exactly the right purchase, particularly when the flowers are arriving before the occasion rather than on it.
Why it lasts
Two weeks in a vase is normal for lisianthus, which is unusual for a flower this delicate. The staggered opening is the reason. While new buds keep arriving, the bouquet stays alive even after the first heads have finished.
Care is ordinary. Angled cut, clean water, lower leaves removed, away from heat. Snipping spent heads off is worth the two minutes, since it pushes the plant's energy towards the buds still waiting.
The petals are the weak point. They are thin, they crease under pressure, and they dislike tight wrapping, which is why lisianthus travels in a loose frame instead of a compressed cone.
Buy lisianthus two days before you want it to look its best, not on the day.
The occasions it suits
The register is gentle. Lisianthus carries neither the obligation of red roses nor the plainness of a field flower, so it fits situations that need tact: a thank you, an apology, a colleague's celebration, a visit to someone the relationship with is still formal.
White and cream grades go heavily into wedding work. Lilac and bicolour varieties end up in gift bouquets more often.
For a hot day in Sao Paulo, ask for water tubes or take an evening slot. Thin petals suffer from warmth well before the stems dry out, and by then the damage shows.
