Fifty-one peonies in Phuket: the heat, the road and the room at the end of it

Rain changes the arithmetic between May and October. A monsoon shower closes visibility on the hill roads and evening traffic on the same bends adds more, so we build the extra time into the route rather than into a phone call from the driver.
Airport arrivals are their own case. A flight lands when it lands, and nobody moves an arrival to suit a florist, so a bouquet for that job is built later in the day and leaves the workshop closer to the hour it is needed. Water wants changing daily, which at this volume means lifting the whole bouquet out, rinsing the vessel and recutting the ends on the slant. Keep it away from the air conditioning outlet as well as from the sun, since dry moving air pulls water out of the petal edges faster than still warm air does.
A cool room overnight buys days.
Splitting the bouquet is worth raising before it arrives rather than after. Nobody wants to take apart a dome that was assembled ring by ring, but on a resort room with one narrow vase it is the only way to get water to every stem instead of half of them.

For a dinner for two by the water, twenty-five heads of the same variety land better and leave the table usable.
