Peony bouquets in Phuket: when wrapped stems are the wrong answer

Boxed peonies with wet foam prepared for a villa delivery in Phuket

Wrapped stems assume somebody is there to receive them, cut the ends and get them into water within the hour. On an island where so many deliveries go to a resort, a marina or an arrivals hall, that assumption is worth testing before the order goes in.

Air here sits between 25 and 33 °C, which shortens the window further. A peony answers warmth faster than anything else in the wrap. An hour spent waiting at a reception desk costs it more than the whole drive.

Three cases where we suggest another format:

  • Nobody is home. A box or a basket with wet foam carries its own water and buys a day or more.
  • The recipient travels on the same evening. Open heads bruise against each other on every bend of a hill road, while closed buds take that journey without complaint.
  • The gift is going to a workplace. There is rarely a vase, and a wrapped bunch spends its first afternoon lying on its side by a counter.

"The peonies people are unhappy with are almost never badly built. They spent two hours somewhere warm with nobody to put them in water."

Roads, and what they do to an open head

Along the west coast the run takes 90 to 180 minutes. That covers Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin. Villas, marinas and airport routes hold separate windows, since the last part of those deliveries happens on foot.

That final stretch is where a peony is most exposed. Carried upright in a closed box it is fine, and the same bunch carried loose in the sun arrives visibly further open. Couriers on the villa and marina routes are told to keep the lid down until somebody signs for it, which sounds fussy and saves a day of vase life.

We match the batch to the route. Longer runs get the tighter buds, evening handovers nearby can take the open ones, and in the rainy season from May to October we add time at the loading end.

Closed peony buds in a box before a marina handover in Phuket

Seasonal peonies arrive here in batches, so the bud stage depends on the shipment. Imported roses hold the frame around them. Hydrangeas fill the width and keep the bunch from looking sparse when the peony count is low. Thai orchids draw a line through it without adding weight. Chrysanthemums go in near the tie when the bunch needs a firmer base to stand on.

Ants, and other things that are not faults

Ants on a closed bud come with the territory. They feed on nectar the flower produces on its outer scales, they do the bloom no damage, and growers do not treat for them.

A shake outdoors before the flowers come inside is enough.

Their presence usually means the stems were grown in a field rather than shipped in cold storage the whole way, which is not a bad sign at all. The same goes for a slight sticky feel on the outer scales, which is that nectar again and washes off a hand in a second. Neither of those is a reason to send a bunch back.

Peony bouquets in Phuket work best when the order names the receiving end. Tell us who takes the handover, whether the flowers travel on afterwards and how long they might wait at a desk, and we will pick the format and the bud stage to match. If the answer is a reception desk on a warm afternoon, we will suggest a box before you have to ask for one.
