Red roses: what actually shortens the week

Hand testing the firmness of a red rose head

A rose does not usually die of old age on a table. It dies of an air lock inside a stem, of warm water, of bacteria in a vase nobody rinsed, or of a radiator two feet away. Every one of those is avoidable, and the flower will hold for a week and a half rather than four days.

Red makes all of this harder to spot in time.

Why a dark shade hides decline

Deep pigment masks an early stage of ageing. A white rose announces trouble with brown flecks on its outer petals, while a red one keeps looking respectable until the head has already gone soft. By the time a red bouquet looks tired to the eye, it has usually been tired for a couple of days.

So judge red roses by hand, not by sight. A fresh head is firm and springs back under light pressure at the base of its petals. A head that yields like a soft fruit has given up its water, and no amount of fresh vase water brings it back.

Bent necks

The most common failure in a red rose is not the petals at all. It is a stem, which folds over just below its head while the bloom itself still looks perfect, and the whole flower hangs down as though someone had broken it.

That fold means a stem has stopped drawing water. Air entered a cut end, usually during an hour spent out of water on a journey home, and the column of water inside it broke. Recutting that stem under running water, at a slant, and returning it to a clean vase within a minute reverses it if you catch it early. Left overnight, the bend sets and the head never lifts again.

Guard petals

Two or three coarse outer petals on a rose are not a defect. They are grown to protect a head in transit, they take scuffs that inner petals would otherwise take, and a florist leaves them in place on purpose.

You may remove them at home once a bouquet is standing in water. If a bouquet arrives with every guard petal already stripped and the outer row looking suspiciously perfect, ask when the flowers were cut, because that is also how a darkened edge gets hidden.

Water, warmth and the first hour

Red roses in a clean glass vase away from a sunny window

Cold water in a scrubbed vase, a stem cut at an angle, no leaves below the water line. Those four things do more for red roses than any sachet.

Warmth is the other half. A rose opens on heat and holds on cool, so a bouquet standing between a window in sun and a heater will run through its whole life in half of its usual time, and the same bouquet in a cool hallway overnight comes back into the room looking freshly delivered.

Fruit in the same room shortens things too, since ripening fruit gives off a gas that makes petals drop early. A bowl of apples beside the vase is a genuine, and completely invisible, problem.

Fresh cut roses last roughly seven to fourteen days, and where a bouquet lands in that spread depends far more on the first hour than on the price of the stems. If your recipient in Monterrey will be out when the courier arrives, ask for the flowers to be left in water rather than lying wrapped on a desk.
