Why the photograph and the delivery differ

Late orders are where substitutions come from. A florist holding twenty orders for the same soft pink garden rose and one box of it has to build the closest thing available. That can mean a different variety, a smaller bud or a spray rose standing in for a single head. None of it is dishonest. All of it stays invisible to you until the photograph of the finished bouquet arrives.

Ask what happens in that case before you pay. A shop that names the substitute up front is easier to deal with than one that photographs the result and hopes.

Booking early also settles the time slot, and slots run out before flowers do. Morning deliveries go first and the middle of the day fills next. What remains by the end of that week is the late evening window nobody wants for a mother who goes to bed early.

Season, not sentiment

The date sits in spring in one half of the world and in autumn in the other, so the sensible question is what is in season where the bouquet is being made rather than what appears in a magazine.

Spring gives tulips, ranunculus, hyacinth, narcissus and the first peonies at the end of it. Autumn gives chrysanthemums, dahlias, lisianthus and late garden roses. Both lists cost less and last longer than anything shipped across a continent in a chilled box, and both look like the time of year outside the window, which the imported version never quite manages.

Peonies deserve a warning of their own. Their season is short, they are cut in tight bud, and a peony that has not started to give under gentle pressure by the second day may never open at all.

Colour in the room it will live in

Most bouquets for this date end up on a kitchen table under warm domestic lighting, which is nothing like the daylight in a shop.

Warm bulbs push cream and peach towards yellow and drain the life out of cool lilac. Pure white stays white under almost anything and reads clearly from the doorway. Deep pink and coral hold their colour in the evening, and a little dark foliage behind them stops the whole bunch from turning into one soft blur at a distance.

A plant instead of a bouquet

Orchids, azaleas and potted hydrangea last months rather than days, and they suit someone who gardens or keeps a windowsill full of things already growing.

For anyone else a plant is a small obligation with a guilty ending. Cut flowers finish and leave, and that clean ending is a feature rather than a compromise.

Whichever you choose, the note matters more than the extra stems. A card printed with the order reads like a field in a database. A few lines in handwriting, even dictated to a florist in Melbourne over the phone, tend to end up in a drawer and stay there for years.
