Wedding flowers: reading the build before the day begins

Underside of a bridal bouquet showing the spiral of stems

A bridal bouquet is photographed from every side, at close range, by people standing a metre away. Almost no other arrangement gets that kind of inspection, and it is why the craft underneath matters more here than the variety list.

You can see most of it in the first thirty seconds of holding one.

What a careful build looks like in the hand

Turn the bouquet upside down and look at the handle. Stems in a proper spiral cross at a single point and fan out below it in an even skirt, cut to one length with a clean angled blade. A rushed build gives itself away there: stems crossing at three or four different heights, torn cuts from blunt secateurs, a fat wad of tape doing the work the spiral should be doing.

The second tell is the profile. Seen from the side, a well made dome has heads sitting at slightly different depths, so light gets between them and the shape has weight. When every head is pressed to the same flat plane, the bouquet reads as a disc in photographs and the flowers at the edge get crushed against a dress within an hour.

Ribbon work is the third. A binding point that has been wrapped tightly and pinned from underneath stays put through a whole day of handing the bouquet back and forth; loose wrapping slips down the stems the first time somebody grips it low.

Things worth checking on collection

  • Stems cut level, with no darkened or split ends.
  • No visible glue, wire or tape above the binding point.
  • Heads firm to a light touch, especially roses at the outer edge.
  • The handle dry enough to hold against pale fabric.

None of this needs expertise. It needs two minutes and good light, which is why collection is better done in the morning than in the rush before the ceremony.

Dressing a venue is a different craft

Scale changes the rules completely. A ceremony arch, an aisle run or a top-table garland is seen from several metres away and often from below, so fine texture and pale filler simply vanish. Large heads, strong colour blocks and clear silhouettes are what survive the distance.

Mechanics matter more than they do in a bouquet, because everything hangs, leans or spans. Foam bricks in cages, chicken wire, cable ties and a frame that can take wind if any part of the day happens outdoors.

Ceremony arch dressed with roses and greenery before guests arrive

Table work has its own constraint that gets forgotten during planning. Guests talk across a table, so anything between about waist height when seated and eye level either goes low or goes tall enough to see under, never in between.

Sequence, and where budgets go wrong

Decisions are cheaper in the right order. Palette and the dress come first, the bridal bouquet is designed against them, and everything else in the day follows from that one arrangement rather than being chosen separately.

Couples usually underestimate the venue and overspend on personal flowers. The bouquet is carried by one person; the room is looked at by everyone for six hours, and a single generous installation at the ceremony point does more than a dozen small identical vases spread down a long table.

One florist should hold the whole job. Batches of the same variety differ in tone between suppliers, and a bouquet ordered from one workroom and buttonholes from another will not quite agree with each other in daylight photographs.

Book early and talk honestly about the season. A florist working in Dushanbe can tell you which of your reference images depend on flowers that will not be cut in the month you have chosen, and that conversation is far better held before deposits than after.
