Roses delivered in Doha: varieties, air-freight imports, and freshness from the cut

In Doha the rose rests almost entirely on imports. Qatar has no plantations of its own — the desert climate leaves no room for field floriculture, so the cut arrives on cargo flights into Hamad International Airport from the Netherlands, Ecuador, Colombia, and Kenya. Lots clear customs, move into cold storage, and reach florists the same day they land.

The category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed arrangements, and single stems for no occasion at all. It also includes boxes, baskets, and large armfuls of 25, 51, and 101 stems — a format that, for a gift, often matters as much as the variety.

Which varieties to choose

We keep three working groups on the shelf: large-headed Ecuadorian roses, classic Dutch roses, and English garden roses by David Austin. Each solves its own task — from a wedding statement to an intimate date-night bouquet.

  • Freedom, Explorer, Mondial — the Ecuadorian flagships. Stem 70–90 cm, dense bud, a vase life of 10–14 days with proper care.
  • Avalanche+, Red Naomi, Vendela — the Dutch classics. Mid-sized bud of 5–7 cm, a rich palette, a reliable workhorse for any task.
  • Juliet, Patience, Constance — David Austin English garden roses. Cup-shaped, densely petalled, with a subtle fragrance, ideal for the bridal bouquet.
  • Spray roses — several buds on a single stem, for airy arrangements and smaller gifts.

Occasions and stem count

One flower is a gentle gesture of attention. Three: a friendly thank-you. Seven and nine: a romantic gift. Twenty-five reads as a major declaration; 51 and 101 are serious gestures for an anniversary, an engagement, or a milestone. For Qatar National Day on 18 December, arrangements in maroon and white — the colours of the national flag — are popular.

In Doha's hot climate the format matters. A bouquet in heavy kraft handles afternoon sun better than an open basket. For longer transit we add a hydrobox, so stems stay in water until the moment of delivery.

Freshness and logistics

Ecuadorian roses grow on plantations at around 2,800 metres above sea level — at altitude the plant develops slowly and builds a tight, heavy bud. From cut to recipient the chain runs 6–8 days with smooth logistics, and the bouquet still lives 10–14 days in the vase.

Every lot is checked at the half-open bud stage — soft to the touch, like a marshmallow, but already coloured. This is the sweet spot between transport firmness and full opening for the recipient. Until assembly, roses are kept in cold storage at +4…+6°C.

"The most common buyer's mistake is choosing roses by price instead of by arrival date. A fresh Dutch greenhouse lot in proper packaging outlives a tired premium Ecuadorian one. In Doha everything comes by air, so always ask the florist when the lot arrived."

Delivery specifics

Summer in Doha means +40…+46°C in the day, with high humidity near the Gulf. Cut flowers lose vitality from overheating in minutes. From June through September we move bouquets only in refrigerated vehicles, deliver in early-morning or late-evening windows, and pack arrangements in heavy kraft with a thermal liner.

Winter in Doha is mild (+18…+25°C, November–March) and ideal for delicate varieties: garden roses, tulips, ranunculus. The range widens, and delivery works any time of day.

We cover all districts: West Bay, The Pearl, Lusail, Msheireb, Al Sadd, Katara, Al Waab, Aspire, Al Rayyan, Education City. Catalogue prices are in Qatari riyals (QAR, ر.ق), paid by card or cash on receipt. During local holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, National Day on 18 December) and Ramadan we run a special schedule — place orders 2–3 days ahead.

Care at home

After delivery, refresh the cut at a 45° angle, remove the leaves below the waterline, and place the roses in a clean vase with cool water. Change the water every two days and add a Chrysal sachet or a pinch of sugar. Keep them away from direct sun and ripening fruit — ethylene shortens vase life by a third.

In summer in Doha the bouquet's main enemy is heat paired with air conditioning: the hot outdoor air and the dry blast of the AC dehydrate the petals just the same. Keep the roses in the coolest room, away from the direct flow of the unit. On days above +40°C, move the bouquet to the refrigerator overnight — that adds 3–5 days with no chemistry at all.

Roses are a flexible category: they suit a colleague's birthday, a wedding anniversary, a bridal bouquet, or a gift for a hospital discharge. We match variety, colour, and format to the specific occasion — message our manager and we'll help build an arrangement that hits the mark.
