Tulips delivered in Doha: varieties, Dutch imports, and the Gulf winter season

In Doha the tulip is a cool-season flower. While northern Europe is in winter, the weather by the Gulf is mild and comfortable — and that's exactly when a tulip is easiest to deliver in perfect shape. Qatar has no fields of its own: every tulip flies in from the Netherlands through Hamad International Airport, in tight closed buds, and finishes ripening at the recipient's home.

The category covers single-variety bouquets from 11 to 51 stems, mixed spring arrangements, and gift boxes pairing tulips with daffodils, ranunculus, and hyacinths. The peak of range and price falls in the Qatari winter — November through March, when the Dutch cut flows steadily.

Groups and varieties

More than 3,000 tulip varieties are registered worldwide. Some 30–40 key ones make it onto the shelf, split into groups by bud shape, stem length, and flowering time.

  • Triumph — the classic cup-shaped bud, stem 40–50 cm. The largest group. Varieties: Strong Gold (yellow), Negrita (purple), Ile de France (red).
  • Darwin Hybrids — large-headed, up to 12 cm across, a very sturdy stem. Apeldoorn (scarlet), Ivory Floradale (cream). For full single-variety bouquets.
  • French Tulips — long-stemmed, up to 70 cm. Maureen (white), Menton (soft pink). For wedding floristry.
  • Parrot — with ruffled, "torn" petals. Rococo (red), Blue Parrot (purple). For expressive arrangements.
  • Double / Peony — double "peony-type" tulips. Mount Tacoma (white), Foxtrot (pink). An alternative to peonies out of their season.
  • Queen of Night — almost black, a deep purple. For a dark, vintage palette.

Season and occasions

In Doha the tulip is especially at home in the cool months — the natural window for delicate cut flowers. Winter brings the main family and corporate events of the season, and the tulip sits well in pale, spring-spirited arrangements that contrast with the hot backdrop of the rest of the year.

The tulip is given by the single stem less often than the rose — formats of 15, 25, and 51 stems are more typical. It's ordered in any number, with no strict odd-count rule. It's also a good corporate flower: clean, neat, with no heavy scent.

A tulip trait: it keeps growing

A cut tulip stays a living plant — the stem stretches 2–3 cm in the vase over the first days. That's a rare trait among cut flowers, and it's taken into account when building an arrangement.

Because of it, tulips reshape the bouquet daily and bend towards the light by the end of the week — that's normal, not a defect. To hold an even shape, place the bouquet in a tall, narrow vase that keeps the stems upright.

"The tulip is the most honest flower on sale. A fresh stem is firm and cool in the hand. In Doha the whole job is to deliver the bud closed: in the heat and under the air conditioning, dry air opens it very fast."

Freshness and logistics

Tulips fly in from the Netherlands on flights into Hamad International Airport and move into cold storage the day they arrive. They come in closed buds — standard practice that extends freshness, with ripening happening at the recipient's home.

We carry tulips in cold hydroboxes: the stems stay in water at +6…+8°C and the bud holds its firmness. In the hot months we add a thermal box so the flower doesn't wilt from overheating in transit. Until assembly, bouquets are kept in cold storage at +4…+6°C.

Delivery specifics

Doha's climate is hot desert. Summer is long and scorching, +40…+46°C from June through September, humid by the Gulf; winter is mild, +18…+25°C, and far kinder to the tulip. In summer we deliver delicate cut flowers early in the morning or late in the evening, in refrigerated transport — by day the bud loses its shape in the heat within minutes.

We deliver across all districts of Doha: West Bay, The Pearl, Lusail, Msheireb, Al Sadd, Katara, Al Waab, Aspire, Al Rayyan, Education City. We take corporate orders for offices, restaurants, and hotels. Catalogue prices are in Qatari riyals (QAR, ر.ق), paid by card or cash on receipt. In peak winter weeks, book 3–5 days ahead.

Care at home

The tulip is handled differently from roses and peonies. The main rules: only cold water at +6…+10°C, a straight (not angled) recut every 2 days, and minimal water in the vase (5–7 cm from the bottom). The tulip can't take deep water — the stems start to rot.

Don't place tulips next to daffodils and hyacinths — their sap speeds up bud ageing. On hot days keep the bouquet in the coolest room, away from the direct flow of the air conditioner, and move it to the refrigerator overnight to slow the opening. A cool +15…+18°C extends the tulips' life to 8–10 days.
