White Roses in Bucharest

White roses when you need a lot of them to match

One white rose on a desk answers to nobody. Forty of them, split across a top table, six guest tables and a registrar's desk, have to agree with each other, and that is where the trouble with this colour begins.

White is not a single tone in a flower market. It runs from a cold, almost blue white through cream, ivory and greenish white to a white with a faint blush at the base of the petal, and each of those belongs to a different variety.

Put two of them within a metre of each other and one of them looks dirty.

One batch, one variety

The rule that solves most of this is dull and worth following anyway: order the whole job as one variety, from one delivery, at one time. Splitting an order across two suppliers or two days produces stems that were grown in different conditions, and the tone shifts enough to be visible when the arrangements finally stand side by side.

Where the quantity genuinely cannot come from a single batch, separate the batches by distance instead. One tone in the ceremony room and another in the dining room reads as a scheme, while both tones on the same table reads as a mistake.

Foliage helps here too. A generous amount of green between the heads gives the eye something to reset against, and two slightly different whites separated by leaf stop competing.

Handling, because everything shows

A bruise on a red petal is a shadow. The same bruise on white browns within hours and reads from across the room, so the flowers are handled less and handled later than anything else on the job.

Work with dry hands and hold each stem below the head rather than round it.

Keep white away from the pollen entirely. Lily anthers stain permanently, water pushes the pigment deeper into the petal, and the only thing that lifts a fresh mark is a dry brush or the sticky side of a piece of tape. Where lilies and white roses appear in the same scheme, the anthers come off before either flower goes near the other.

Order of work matters as well. White goes in last, after the greenery, after any dyed or heavily scented material and after anyone has finished moving furniture past the table.

Stage, and how it looks in photographs

Closed buds photograph as pale green shapes. Half-open heads photograph as white, and that difference decides whether a room looks the way it was planned or slightly unfinished.

Warmth is what moves them. Roses brought in a day or two early and left in a warm room open on time, while stems delivered on the morning itself stay tight through the whole event.

One more thing decides how a room looks on the second day, and it is the water. Clear glass hides nothing: a cloudy vase, a slick forming on the inside of it, a leaf left below the waterline turning to slime. Under pale flowers that murk pulls the eye down to the stems and away from the heads. So the vases are emptied and refilled rather than topped up, and every leaf that would sit below the line comes off at the bench. Whoever keeps the arrangements afterwards, in an office in Bucharest or at home, inherits an easier week for that half hour of stripping.
